Year 3's Star Writers!

Congratulations to Rayne and John who are this week's Star Writers in Year 3! They both wowed us with their superb poems about water.

Rayne tried hard to use rhyme throughout her poem and thought carefully about her poem's rhythm and how it might be performed. In addition to that, she included alliteration, repetition and even onomatopoeia! As we read her poem, we felt like we were in the middle of tempestuous waters!

My favourite part of my poem was "Drip drop, drip drop, the waves were foaming and bubbling" because I used onomatopoeia. - Rayne, Sequoia

John used powerful vocabulary throughout his poem to create a vivid image in the reader's mind. We loved the range of adjectives and adverbs he used, as it really helped us picture the water he was describing.

My favourite part of my poem was "Vicious, colossal waves ferociously gushed" because the words I used made it seem like the water is very dangerous and you shouldn't swim in it.  - John, Hazel

We clearly have some very talented poets in Year 3, keep up the superb writing!

Year 4 - WE Walk for Water campaign

Today, we had a non-uniform day to support the WE Walk for Water campaign.

Year 4 were shocked to learn that throughout some developing countries women and girls have to walk 3.7 miles each day to collect water, which is often contaminated.

The WE Walk for Water campaign is run by the WE Movement, who believe that every person has a right to clean water.

Year 4 had a great (and soggy) time walking/running around the field today to support the cause.

We believe that every child and adult around the world should have access to running clean water!

Ash- Star Writer! 27.04.18

In Ash class, our star writer for this week is Ketty Omwanghe!

Ketty has produced an excellent historical story about Thomas Barnardo. She has planned her work, used powerful vocabulary and has worked very hard on her spellings.

Well done Ketty, you are a super star! Keep up the excellent work!

I can't wait to read more of your writing, Miss Daly :)

Birch makes Juice and tests the Acidity!

Today, Birch class were introduced to their new science topic of Water, Acids and Alkalies! The students had many questions about the nature of acids, how strong they can be, and where they can be found in everyday life. Their task consisted of making orange juice from oranges and mandarins, then test its level of acidity...

Here, Tommy and Summer Rose can be seen dipping their pieces of universal indicator paper into the juice to see which colour it turned...

Having made a prediction at the start of the lesson, the students confirmed whether or not their prediction was correct.

Sofia asked some fantastic questions about what would happen if you added an acid to an alkali, and Adi wanted to know if the dangers of strong alkalies were the same of strong acids. There were more curious questions from other members as well. Good work, Birch Class, we will continue Water, Acids, and Alkalies next week!

Ash - Rainforest finale!

As the final part of the rainforest topic, Ash class were given the opportunity to use their reflectiveness and resourcefulness skills and were asked to create a presentation about any aspect of the rainforest of their choice. With the option to work independently or in a group, all the pupils worked incredibly hard to record and present their findings about the rainforest.

This was a great chance for Miss Daly to see how well Ash class worked together and how they took responsibility for their own learning.

Pictorial maths on the playground!

Yesterday year 3 enjoyed the glorious weather as they solved fractional problems in their pairs. Building on their understanding of finding fractions of amounts using concrete objects, the children were able to find the solution to tricky problems by drawing it.

Not only did they find unit fractions of amounts, but they were also able to find non-unit fractions of amounts where the numerator is larger than 1.

"It was much easier drawing out the question to solve it. First, we shared the total amount into equal groups and then we looked at the numerator to tell us how many groups we needed to look at," Bayleigh, Sequoia

"Before you divide the total into equal groups, you need to know how many groups to put it in. You can use the denominator to do this as this represents how many equal parts a whole is divided into," Sajida, Sequoia

Great job year 3, you will be mathematical masters in no time!

Year 3 - Learning Challenge

Please find below Year 3's learning challenge for Summer 1. Please encourage your child to complete a project of their choice at home. All completed learning challenges will be rewarded with merits and a certificate in E for Excellence assembly.

Year 3 - Curriculum Newsletter

My Book Blog:

All children have been given their logins to complete blogs at home on ‘My Book Blog’. They will be reading books in their guided reading sessions in order to complete the blogs at home. If there is particular story you are reading with your child at home, or if there is a book the children have taken out at the local library, please check with the class teacher to see if it is on ‘My Book Blog’. If it is on the system, that book can then be added to your child’s bookshelf, so that they can complete blogs on that book too. Please click here to access the 'My Book Blog' homepage so that your child can log in.

Fractions in Year 3

The year 3 children have had a superb start to the Summer term by continuing their work on fractions. This week, children have been exploring how to find unit and non-unit fractions of an amount. They started by exploring the method practically using multi-link.

"We learnt that in order to find a fraction of an amount, you must first divide the amount into equal groups using the denominator," Amandeep, Sequoia.

"If it is a unit fraction, the numerator is one which means that once you have separated the amount into equal groups, you only need to find the amount in one group," James, Sequoia.

"If it is a non-unit fraction, you would find the amount in the number of groups that is shown by the numerator," Michael, Sequoia.

Great work year 3!
