George White...our budding artist!

After being so inspired by our visit from illustrator, Mike Spoor, George has discovered his passion for art and drawing and has been producing some wonderful pieces.  In his own time, he has bought some charcoals and pastels and spends his evenings and weekends practising and perfecting his skills and techniques. It is grea to see children who want to continue their learning at home as well as at school. Well done George!

Here is his latest piece:

Projects Galore!

Well done to Holly Chilvers, Sophie Nickson and Saffron Lubin who brought in their projects to share with us today.  We had everything from One Direction to whales and butterflies! We are very impressed with the pupils' hard work and commitment to their projects and want to thank them for this.

"I decided to do my project on butterflies because I like butterflies. I found out that they eat small bugs like flies and ants. My mum helped me make this butterfly sanctuary." Saffron Lubin.

"I enjoy researching about popstars for my project because it is something I am interested in. Did you know that Nicki Minajj was born in Trinidad, Tobago and moved to Queens, New York when she was just 5 years old?" Holly Chilvers.

"I have researched different types of whales and have drawn a skeleton of a whale and labelled it. I found out that a baby whale can weigh 1,500 pounds when it is born! They also move at about 6 miles per hour." Sophie Nickson

Games Based Learning - Endless Ocean

This week, Rowan class have been using the Wii in their Literacy lessons to help produce different styles of writing.  After having their 'dive' they then have been working in their dive teams to produce diary recounts, narratives, information texts and persuasive writing, as well as brushing up on their note taking skills. We have found using games in the classroom enhances their engagement and involvement in the lesson and improves their quality of writing. Plus, it's fun!

Here are some of our dive teams at work:

"I have found Literacy fun and exciting this week because we get to play the Wii and get to do each activity." Daisy Paius

"I have really enjoyed Literacy this week and I really enjoy playing games in lesson itmakes it fun". Saffron Lubin

"I have found Literacy fun this week!" Jack Barnett

Literacy inspired Art - Book Club

Today was our last day of Book Club...ahhhh! To mark this occasion, we decided (with the help of Miss Sparks!) to create a display to show all our work on our study of the book 'War Horse'. This will include character profiles, plot trigger analysis, haiku poems and now...artwork!

At lunchtime we designed our own version of the famous War Horse front cover by creating silhouette paintings using water colours and black suger paper.  Take a look at us hard at work:

The display will be appearing in the library after half term.

Thank you to all the children who have attended Book Club this term.  We have worked hard and had a lot of fun too!

More fantastic projects to share!

Well done to Luis Bone, Holly Clark and Chloe Trew from Rowan who have put in the effort this term to produce some excellent and varied projects.

Luis has been researching Dinosaurs and has found interesting facts on many different species.
Here are his favourites:

Chloe has been spending her free time researching Dolphins and has used the information she has found to create a 3D model of their habitat:

Holly has been researching her family.  She has asked members of her family about her ancestors and created a detailed family tree.  She has also taken the time to interview her family to find out more about their likes and dislikes and how they are related to each other:

We are very pleased with the continued support the pupils are getting with their projects at home and love finding out about their interests.  Thank you!

Nathan's Local History Project

We were thrilled to read Nathan's project on the local history in Romford and the part the local area played in World War 2.  Nathan has spent a great deal of time researching, comparing and compiling great facts about our local area and has even won his local knowledge badge from Cubs for his efforts! We love to see our pupils so enthusiastic about their projects and cannot wait to what other pupils  have been creating.

Louise Paius Inspired by Book Club

This half term, the Book Club was open to Years 5 and 6 and we have been studying the Michael Morpurgo classic, 'War Horse'.

We have read the book and studied different aspects of the story, from the language used to create imagery and effect, to the various plot triggers that keep the story so engaging.

Last week, we watched a BBC news item about the famous Flanders Field of World War 1 (a period in which the story is set) and used the information and description used to create our own 'War Haiku' poems.

Louise Pauis went the extra mile and produced 3 Haiku poems, learned them by heart and performed them on our school field to emulate the scene of Flanders Field.

Take a look at her performance:

Thank you also to Junior Makina, David Sangojinmi, Louise Straw, Raheem Miah, Jordan Crane, Fletcher Marney, Jack Ibbunson, Mia-Rose Stevens, Elizabeth King and Emmanuel Pala for their hard work and dedication to Book Club this term - enjoy your well earned day out in London today to see the show!
