Resourceful Rounding in Year 4!

We have had such a brilliant first half-term back at school. The children have surpassed all expectations and have settled in so well after such a long time off school. They have been particularly impressive in their maths lessons and have studied number and place value in quite some depth, so that they have a strong foundation for the rest of the year.

In the final week, the children have been exploring how to round 4-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We started by using concrete resources (dienes and place value counters) to support the children's understanding.

"I can see that 42 is closer to 40 than it is to 50 because you only need to take 2 ones away to make 40, but you would need to add 8 ones to get to 50.That means it must round down to 40." Annabelle, Larch

Some children also used place value counters to support their learning, as it helped them visualise why we round down or up - something that is quite tricky to grasp at first!

I'm sure the children would love to show you how they have been rounding at home. They have all been following their 3 steps to success.

For example:

Round 5238 to the nearest 10:

1. Label the columns to show the value of each digit.

2.  As we are rounding to the nearest 10, underline the 10s column and show the multiples of 10 either side of that number.

3. Finally, you look to the column on the right of the one you're rounding to. In this case, it is the ones. Circle the ones and use the rhyme to help you decide if you round up or down.

"1-4 stay on the floor, 5-9 climb the vine"

In this example, we have 8 ones so we are going to climb the vine and round up to 5240.

The rules are the same, whether you are rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. You just have to make sure that you underline and circle the correct columns and you think carefully about those multiples!
Here are a few for the children to practise with you at home:

Any children who bring in their answers after half-term, will receive a merit for their hard work and a wonderfully scented sticker!

We hope you have an amazing break!

From the Year 4 team :)

Year 4 Certificates 23.10.2020

What a wonderful week we have had in Year 4 as our final week before half term. Ash, Birch and Larch class have progressed brilliantly in our first term and we are so proud of how well they have all settled in.

We are really pleased that they have all consistently remembered their Broadford jobs: turn up to school on time every day, try your best in every lesson and be kind and polite to everyone you meet.

A big well done to all children, and some in particular who went above and beyond in their learning this week!

E for Excellence
These children have put in 110% effort this week and really showed us how in the green zone they were with their learning. Thank you for your incredible hard-work.

Congratulations to: Shajia, Isla, Charlie

Star Writer
This week, the children have worked hard on writing their non-chronological reports on the Romans. It was brilliant to see their correct use of report features, rhetorical questions and so many interesting phrases.

Congratulations to: Sophia, Kezia, Hannah

Rockstars Champions!
Congratulations to Larch class, the winners of this week's Battle of the Bands for the first time thanks to their excellent team work! This was our tightest battle yet, with Birch and Ash working hard until the final minutes of the tournament. A big well done for your hard work, Birch and Ash.
Ms. Delahunty is so proud of Larch's win, but more importantly, how we all worked together and every single member of our class took part. Everyone participating is the best part of our win and hopefully Larch class will get plenty more wins next term.
An extra special congratulations to our top three contributors in each class: Annabelle, Adrian M, Jessica, Aarna, Iniya, Chidubem, Dhriti, Srinika and Iyinope
and to all of those who levelled up this week.

Year 3 Half Term Battle of the Bands TT Rockstars

Congratulations to Elm class, who were last week's winners in the Battle of the Bands!

Excellent work to the top three contributors in each class, too!

Praharsh
Ehan
Aksanan

This week, the Battle of the Bands will run over the whole half-term. Make sure you're on there every day to earn coins for your class!

In order for a class to be crowned champions, the children need to log in to their TT Rockstars account at home and play to earn as many coins as possible.

They can play as normal in Garage Mode to collect coins for their class.

The more coins they earn, the higher the chance that their class will win!

We will announce the winners on Friday 6th November along with the top three scorers from each class & their certificates.

Good luck Year 3!

Celebrating Black History Month in Year 4

Year 4 contributed to the whole school project of Black History Month, with each class studying a different historical figure. Birch class learned more about Rosa Parks, Ash class creatively represented the story of Matthew Henson through a collective mosaic, and Larch class enjoyed the wonderful music of Louis Armstrong and created our own pictures of Wonderful Worlds.

Rosa Parks was a social activist who ignited the civil rights movement in America. She stood up for equality and fought for Black people's rights.

Louis Armstrong is a famous musician, known best for his iconic "What a Wonderful World" and the rise to popularity of his jazz music and trumpeting. He is acclaimed for his "scatting" technique and his appreciation of the little things in life, despite a difficult life.

Matthew Henson was the first man to reach the North Pole in 1909. However, he was not recognised for his achievements when he returned to America because of the colour of his skin. He was later recognised 100 years later.

"Rosa Park's was very brave to stand up for herself. I think she did the right thing by sitting on the bus and saying no when she was told to move." Kezia, Birch.

"People need to treat each other equally. We should live in a fair world." Lukas, Birch.

"It's horrible that these people weren't recognised when they did amazing things. I'm glad we can remember them now," Nicole, Larch.

"Louis Armstrong's song (What a Wonderful World) is about love and happiness and friendship, I really like it," Frankie, Larch.

"It's so unfair that Matthew Henson did not receive a medal! Everyone is equal, no matter if you are Black or White or Asian." Hannah, Ash

"He should have gotten his medal there and then instead of waiting 100 years for it." Vinney, Ash

"Black Lives Matter. Just like Matthew Henson's life and achievements did too." Ife, Ash

Year 4 TT Rockstars: Half-term Battle of the Bands!

Congratulations to Larch class, who were last week's winners in the Battle of the Bands! Will it be Birch's turn to take the top spot this week?

Excellent work to the top three contributors in each class, too!

TTRS - Star of the week!

A huge congratulations to Dhriti in Year 4, who is our first times table star of the week.

Astonishingly, she is the highest coin earner in the entire school! This means she regularly uses TTRS at school and at home to improve her speed and accuracy in regards to times table knowledge. With all that daily hard work, it is no wonder she is such a maths whizz!

Well done Dhriti - we are so proud of you.

I wonder who our next star of the week will be?

Another special mention to Cherry class who have been the class most active on TTRS in the past 14 days and have the most correct answers on average. What a bunch of super stars they are!

Historical Enquiry in Year 4

Year 4 have continued to develop their historical skills this half-term in their topic: 'Conflict'. They have been investigating the Roman army in some depth by studying their armour and weaponry and have been using sources of evidence to find out information. Along with their investigative skills, they have worked hard to become historical enquirers by asking a variety of questions about the past, which they will then independently research and find the answers to.

As historians, they are working hard to use evidence to build up a picture of how the Roman army fought and have even able to compare the Roman Army with other armies in the same time period!

"Some of these sources are really complicated, you have to work hard to try and understand them.", Shajia, Larch

"It was really fun to ask questions about the past, I can't wait to find out the answers to them now!" Ruby, Birch

It has been brilliant to see all the children develop as historians and we can't wait to see how they communicate all of the information they have learned at the end of the unit. Well done, year 4!

Year 4's Pop Art Pop Up Arena!

Year 4's Pop Art Pop Up Arena!

The children in year 4 have had such fun creating their own Roman Pop Art Monuments in their art lesson. They studied two different monuments which are the Colosseum and the Roman Temple.

It was great to see the children working so well together once again and they were all able to develop their artistic techniques and create modern art. Children had the opportunity to design their monuments with bright, popping colours and build their own pop-up arena. Well done year 4!

"This is really cool. It is like creating a modern Rome." Tyler, Birch.

"I love how it stands out when it pops and it makes it look real," Jessica, Larch.

"I really like the contrast between all the different colours. It's so different to ancient Rome!" Ife, Ash

Fantastic Formations in Year 4 History!

Last week Year 4 went outside to practise their Roman Formations. Since we were only able to see secondary sources (pictures) of these formations, the children made their own source! The children were then able to see, in real life, how and why the Roman's were so successful in battle.

The Testudo (tortoise)                            The Orb                                        The Wedge

The children used whiteboards as their sheild (scutum), and rulers as their swords (gladius). Mrs Clements in Ash Class was holding the standard, which if taken, brings great shame on the Roman Empire.

"It's really hard trying to keep in formation when you're walking! The Romans most definitely were well trained to do it!" Keira, Ash

"Silencium! Sin! Dex! That means...silence, left and right. Those were the commands Miss Young was saying. It's also what Roman soldiers would have heard in battle or training." Kyriq, Ash

Larch class were also very excited about making the ancient formations. Ryan, our legionnaire, led our class out to train, as we are highly-trained, very disciplined soldiers, and these auxiliaries protected our leader fearlessly. They finally formed the V-shaped formation, known as the Wedge, to attack, in a terrifying and brave way! Well done Larch class.

"We have to protect our flag, and that's why we make the Orb and the tortoise around it,"  Victoria, Larch (the protector of the standard).
"You have to hold your shield above your heads and at the sides to protect all over your body,"   Ella, Larch.

Perfect poetry in Year 3

Continuing with our work on Black History Month, today in Literacy we were inspired by Lamont Lilly's poem 'All Natural':

I like the kind of hair
that will stand up for its rights
the kind that kicks
screams and protests.
the kind that resists
and boycotts with every coil
the kind that fights
riots and rebels.
the kind that won’t
be quiet for nobody.
the kind that won’t
be anything but black.
the kind that refuses
to relax

We used this poem and our own ideas and words on hair to create our own acrostics and freestyle poems.

We then read them aloud to the class, considering our volume, tone and intonation.
