Year 4 Get Wild!

Year 4 Wild Passport: Fire Explorers!

This week year 4 had their wild passport day! Today, our class went outdoors to learn all about an essential and exciting element: Fire. We learned how to be safe, how to build and light fires, and even had a chance to practise some cool survival skills!

Here is what we got up to during our adventurous day in the woodland:

Learning About the Fire Triangle

Before touching any wood, we sat down and talked about fire circle etiquette to make sure everyone stays safe. We learned about the "Fire Triangle", which shows that fire needs three things to burn:

  • Heat

  • Oxygen

  • Fuel

We also learned why it is so important to put a fire out completely when we are done, and we explored the difference between deadwood (which is great for fires) and green wood.

 Our Wild Activities

We split into groups and worked through some super fun and hands-on activities:

  • Wood Detectives: We collected and sorted deadwood by size, and even learned how to grade different sticks.

  • Jigsaw Puzzles: We put together a puzzle of the fire triangle to remember how fires work.

  • Sparks Out of 10 Competition: We practised using a fire steel to produce bright sparks!

  • Mini Fire Lighting: We got to light cotton wool pads to create our very own mini fires safely.
