Play time is a hidden part of the school day for you, so our Summer term 'Stay and Learn' sessions will allow you to see how play at break and lunchtime has developed during Broadford’s OPAL journey, how the children are playing and, also, gives context to the requests and pleas that we often send out to the school community e.g., welly requests, loose parts donations, fundraising efforts. 

You are invited to come during the afternoon on Thursday 22nd May at 2.30pm, firstly we will give you some information on OPAL and then we will invite you to play with your child/children in the school grounds.

If possible, please bring a loose part donation to help with den making, for instance a tyre, clean wood, tarpaulin, plastic pipe, crate. We also are always looking for ride-on toys, scooters, old suitcases and anything form the loose parts list send out previously.

We are also going to use this opportunity to welcome to you see the children's art work that they will be developing over next week.

Year 3 Learning Journey - Maths

It's been a busy half term of learning in Year 3 and the children have been focusing on the topic mass and capacity. The children began by using the scales to compare the mass of different objects. They were able to identify that a heavier object will force the scales to push down, whilst the lighter object is pushed into the air. When the mass of two objects is equal, the scales will return to the centre. 

Harvey said 'You have to carefully tip the flour so it doesn't all come out at once!'

Next, the children expanded their knowledge of their topic by learning how to add and subtract mass. It was important for the children to start by adding the grams first, before adding the kilograms. The Year 3 teachers were very impressed with the children's use of reasoning throughout the series of lessons. 

Harry said 'You have to count each interval carefully!'

Finally, the children measured volume using millilitres and litres. As part of this, the children completed a practical lesson, which encouraged them to use concrete objects to improve their understanding of the topic. It was fantastic to see the teamwork and communication skills of the children on display, and through their conversations, it was clear that they had made progress in their understanding of capacity. 

Miya-Rose said 'Measuring is lots of fun!'

This week, the children moved on to their second fractions unit and began to build upon their existing knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions.

Well done Year 3, you've all worked hard this half term and made excellent progress.

What a fabulous week, we have had in Year 3!

The children completed their independent write in Literacy informing others how to look after and care for their chosen pet, by writing their very own fact files.

In Maths, we have been continuing with mass and capacity, adding and subtracting different volumes, which has been tricky for many of the children, but as always, they have demonstrated great resilience to keep on trying to problem solve.

We also had a wonderful time creating, making and baking our very own healthy muffins in DT. The children got to use their new skills to chop, grate, slice and peel the fruit. We finished by tasting and evaluating our delicious, healthy treats!

It has been a very busy week and the children have all been superstars. This week's certificate winners are;

Bonjour Year 4!

 Last week, Year 4 were extremely lucky to welcome a French acting company into school. 

The actors did not speak English to the children so it was a great test of their resilience and basic French knowledge learnt at Broadford.

The children had to build a TV show with the actors all in French. The children became part of the show and practiced some French with support from the actors.

There were lots of laughs to be had and the children gave us great reviews afterwards!

Super Survival Skills!

 

On , the Year 3 children put their survival skills to the test by taking on the very dangerous terrain also known as the school field!

They had to display resilience, resourcefulness, reciprocity and reflectiveness to ensure that they could survive in the wild.

The children had to work together to solve the first problem of how to make a fire and what resources they would need. After mastering task 1 it was swiftly on to the next challenge - how to build a shelter, the children demonstrated great reciprocity during this task as well as using their resourcefulness skills to locate materials and then build a shelter that would protect them from the elements. The last challenge that awaited the children, was working out which plants, flowers and berries would be safe to eat and which would make them poorly. They demonstrated great reflectiveness skills during this part of the challenge, planning carefully using the key and plant guide and discussing their learning with their peers.
