Year 3 DIY Skills

Year 3 Life Skills: DIY and Everyday Independence

Our Year 3 children  learnt  amazing DIY skills this

half term. They covered skills like tying shoe laces,

health snack choices, using a tape measure, setting

a table, using cutlery sets ,making a breakfast bar (non-cooked),

fire safety,  knowing escape routes  and smoke alarms.

Tying Shoe Laces

Our children watched a demonstration of how to

tie shoe laces. Thereafter, they  practised how to get their

tied.

Health Snack Choices

Another of the life skills topics was healthy snack

choices. The children learnt the difference between

healthy and unhealthy snacks with the importance

of eating healthy snacks.

Using a tape measure

Yet another skill taught was how to measure things

using  a tape measure. Again, the children had plenty

of practice as shown below.

Setting a Table and Using Cutlery Set

Next came setting a table and using cutlery sets

correctly. It was a joy to watch our children

setting tables and learning to use cutlery sets correctly.

Making a breakfast bar (non-cooked)

Additionally, our pupils learn to make

scrumptious delicious non - cooked breakfast bars.

Fire Safety

Furthermore, they learnt about fire safety

and knowing escapes routes  and smoke alarms.

Well done, Year 3!

Readers Theatre in Year 4

Readers' Theatre is a reading activity which involves reading a script aloud in a small group. Last week in Year 4, the children have taken a script from their class novel 'The Bad Guys' and worked in small groups to take turns to speak. They have applied their reciprocity skills to work alongside others and their resourcefulness skills to act imaginatively.

During this session, the children were concentrating on maintaining eye contact with their audience and displaying confidence when reading aloud as well as using tone and expression.

The Year 4 staff have been blown away by the children's acting skills, a huge well done to all of the children.

Readers Theatre was fun today because the script was funny! - Zarrar

We used actions, tone and volume when we were acting it out. - Adejuwon

I really enjoy acting out the different characters. - Alfie

"I now know how to demonstrate the difference between a comma and a full stop for engagement and pace." - Vikhyat

Deer Delights!

As part of our Year 4 experiences, the children have spent some time this week, putting their Design and Technology skills to the test in a fantastic wildlife project. After researching what ingredients are safe and nutritious for deer, the pupils worked collaboratively to create special “deer blocks” using a mix of fruits and vegetables. Drawing on their DT learning from Year 3, the children confidently used the bridge hold technique to safely chop the ingredients with care and precision before using their grating skills to slice the ingredients, finally mixing everything together to make the blocks.

This hands-on activity not only strengthened their practical food preparation skills but also deepened their understanding of local wildlife needs and responsible environmental care. The deer blocks will be donated to our local Deer Aid Society, who can ensure they are distributed safely and appropriately to support the health of local deer populations.

"I hope the deer enjoy these!" - Gabia, Elm

It was fun squashing the ingredients together to make the deer blocks - Sophia

Year 4 DIY Skills

Year 4 Children Learning Life Skills: DIY and Everyday Independence

This term, our Year 4 children have been busy learning some fantastic DIY and life skills that will help them become more independent and responsible both at home and in the community. From learning how to stay safe in emergencies to discovering how to make healthy choices, our pupils have truly embraced hands-on learning!

Knowing How to Call 999

Safety comes first! The children have been learning the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency and how to call 999 responsibly. They now understand which situations require emergency services, what information to share with the operator, and how to stay calm while helping others.

Developing Better Sleep Habits

We’ve also been talking about good sleep routines and how they affect our energy, mood, and concentration. The children explored tips for winding down before bedtime—such as turning off screens, reading a book, and keeping a regular bedtime—to make sure they get the rest their growing bodies need.

Learning to Polish Shoes

A favourite activity for many was learning how to polish shoes! With brushes, and polish at the ready, Year 4 pupils took pride in bringing dull shoes back to life. They discovered that taking care of belongings not only keeps things looking smart but also teaches responsibility and attention to detail.

"Polishing the shoes as different, I've not done that before!" - Elsie

Making a Simple Salad

Healthy eating was another highlight. The children learned to make a simple, nutritious salad using fresh ingredients. They practised safe cutting techniques, explored different vegetables, and even discussed the importance of eating a colourful variety of foods.

"I used the bridge technique that I learnt in Year 3" - Sophia

Using a Screwdriver

As part of their DIY skills, the children were introduced to using a screwdriver safely. They practised turning screws into wood and discovered how this simple tool is used in everyday repairs and construction. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learned a new practical skill!

Recycling and Caring for Our Planet

Finally, our young learners explored the importance of recycling and looking after the environment. They learned how to sort different materials—plastic, paper, glass, and metal—and why it’s important to reduce waste. This sparked thoughtful discussions about how small actions can make a big difference to our planet.

" It was so much fun and I learned lots of new skills." Danni - Ella

A Great Step Towards Independence

It’s been a busy and rewarding time for Year 4! These activities have not only built practical life skills but have also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and self-confidence. We’re so proud of how enthusiastic and capable our pupils have been—and we can’t wait to see where their new DIY skills take them next!
