Year 4 DIY Skills

Year 4 Children Learning Life Skills: DIY and Everyday Independence

This term, our Year 4 children have been busy learning some fantastic DIY and life skills that will help them become more independent and responsible both at home and in the community. From learning how to stay safe in emergencies to discovering how to make healthy choices, our pupils have truly embraced hands-on learning!

Knowing How to Call 999

Safety comes first! The children have been learning the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency and how to call 999 responsibly. They now understand which situations require emergency services, what information to share with the operator, and how to stay calm while helping others.

Developing Better Sleep Habits

We’ve also been talking about good sleep routines and how they affect our energy, mood, and concentration. The children explored tips for winding down before bedtime—such as turning off screens, reading a book, and keeping a regular bedtime—to make sure they get the rest their growing bodies need.

Learning to Polish Shoes

A favourite activity for many was learning how to polish shoes! With brushes, and polish at the ready, Year 4 pupils took pride in bringing dull shoes back to life. They discovered that taking care of belongings not only keeps things looking smart but also teaches responsibility and attention to detail.

"Polishing the shoes as different, I've not done that before!" - Elsie

Making a Simple Salad

Healthy eating was another highlight. The children learned to make a simple, nutritious salad using fresh ingredients. They practised safe cutting techniques, explored different vegetables, and even discussed the importance of eating a colourful variety of foods.

"I used the bridge technique that I learnt in Year 3" - Sophia

Using a Screwdriver

As part of their DIY skills, the children were introduced to using a screwdriver safely. They practised turning screws into wood and discovered how this simple tool is used in everyday repairs and construction. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learned a new practical skill!

Recycling and Caring for Our Planet

Finally, our young learners explored the importance of recycling and looking after the environment. They learned how to sort different materials—plastic, paper, glass, and metal—and why it’s important to reduce waste. This sparked thoughtful discussions about how small actions can make a big difference to our planet.

" It was so much fun and I learned lots of new skills." Danni - Ella

A Great Step Towards Independence

It’s been a busy and rewarding time for Year 4! These activities have not only built practical life skills but have also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and self-confidence. We’re so proud of how enthusiastic and capable our pupils have been—and we can’t wait to see where their new DIY skills take them next!
