Year 4 Wild Passport Day

Wild Passport Day: Rope Skills!

What a brilliant Wild Passport Day we had exploring rope skills!

Our young adventurers showed fantastic resilience as they tackled tricky knots, learning how to tie a timber hitch and a clove hitch to join sticks together. Practising sheer lashing to build flagpoles took real determination and patience!

We showed brilliant resourcefulness by using natural materials and braiding wheels to weave cord and craft round braid bookmarks using the Kumihimo technique. During free choice time, everyone got creative with binoculars, magnifying glasses, maps, and compasses to explore the outdoors.

Working in small groups really brought out our reciprocity—children helped each other hold sticks, measure cord, and design colorful flags to attach to their poles.

Finally, taking time for reflectiveness allowed us to look back on what we accomplished. It was wonderful to see everyone think about how much their knot-tying and lashing confidence grew throughout the day.

Well done to all our fantastic outdoor learners!

"Tying the clove hitch was really tricky at first, but I kept trying and didn't give up until my flagpole stayed up!" - Isabella, Willow

"My partner helped hold the sticks still while I wrapped the cord, and then we swapped so they could tie theirs too." - Zachary, Maple

"I loved using the braiding wheel to turn plain thread into a cool bookmark—it felt like magic!" - Elliot, Elm
