Year 4 Subject Blog - Maths

We have had a busy and successful Half term in Maths! The children in Elm, Maple, and Willow have been putting in tremendous effort to master their understanding of Place Value.

We took a hands-on, practical approach to breaking numbers down in unusual ways. While it was tricky to wrap our heads around at first, the whole year group showed incredible perseverance, and everyone got there in the end! We explored number lines that don't start at zero. The children learned a step-by-step method to tackle these: first finding the overall value of the line, dividing by the number of intervals, and then filling in the missing steps accurately.

What a fantastic effort from all three classes! Keep up the brilliant mathematical thinking, Year 4!

"At first I thought flexible partitioning was impossible, but once I broke the numbers apart, it suddenly all clicked!" - Kevin, Elm

"I used to get stuck when number lines didn't start at zero, but now I know the secret trick is finding the value of the intervals first!" - Happiness, Maple

"Place value is like solving a code—once you figure out what each digit is worth, you can build any number you want!" - Jason, Willow
