Year 3 Read Under a Tree!

To enrich the children's learning experiences whilst at Broadford, Year 3 took the time last week to complete our final enrichment task, which was to read under a tree.

The children began their experience by listening to a book of their choice being read to them by their class teacher, before taking time out to get comfortable, relax and read a book of their choice. Many of the children used their reciprocity skills to read along with their peers but others chose to take the time to read quietly alone.

'I enjoyed it because it was peaceful.' - George

'I liked reading under the tree because we were outside!' - Riley

'I loved reading outside, I was in the green zone!' - Isabella

Drum & Trumpet Corps - Year 4

The Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps visited Broadford this week to give students a taster session. Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed putting on the band uniform and marching together with instruments. They tried making sounds out of them and soon realised it is harder than it looks! We now have many students eager to learn to play the drums, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet and many other exciting instruments!

Stomp the School

Students are having a blast of a time in Broadford Univerity's Stomp the School! We have been learning about the different sounds we can make with our bodies and working hard to make music! Students have realised that reciprocity is the key to success so that they are in rhythm with each other and keeping the beat. We are having such fun making sounds and music on Friday's and improving our super awesome body percussion skills, Miss Hamlin is extremely impressed!

"I just had to keep practising, and then I got it!" - Daisy

"My favourite part is when we all go STOMP STOMP CLAP!" - Adam

"It's important to keep count" - Callum

“I’m happy because I can click now!” - Zac

“I found it difficult to stomp and move at the same time, but got there in the end” - Finley

Chromebook Crew!

The Chromebook Crew are very much up and running with their new G-Suite accounts. They have already truly impressed their course tutor, Miss Estall, by managing various tricks and shortcuts after just two sessions! This week they created their own data and inserted bar and pie charts to then analyse it.

Oh wow! How did it do that so quickly! Its like magic! Alfie

They are now thinking about what they would like their presentations to be about...

Watch this space!

Arya was very chuffed with his data and learned how to change all of the colours.

Chris went for the pie chart!

Lucian figured out how to make his bars 3D!

"That looks much better" he stated.

Emily found it tricky to pick the colours she liked the most!
"I like them all! There's loads of different shades too." she explained.

Evolution and Adaptation -Dogs Trust

WOW!

We have had such an exciting afternoon in Ash class! Today, we were joined by Maria from the Dogs Trust to teach us all about how dogs have evolved and adapted from wolves.

Maria commented on how well behaved Ash class were and what fantastic listening skills they demonstrated.

There are not any photos of the wolf that dogs evolved from as it was over 130,000 years ago. The closest wolf to the one that dogs have evolved from, that we have access to images of, is the Gray wolf.

Did you know?
The DNA match of a Yorkshire Terrier and a German Shepherd to a Gray Wolf are both 95.5% !

We learnt the importance of being responsible when looking after a dog and played a hilarious game of charades.

Evie acted out fleas and worming tablets.

Ethan acted out feeding your dog

We also were introduced to some dogs that have not had the happiest life so far.

This is Splash - Splash is a 3 month old puppy and he was abandoned at the side of a road. Unfortunately, Splash does not have any fur and his skin is scabby and sore due to an infestation of fleas, that had not been treated.

The Dogs Trust have helped Splash and re-homed him! :)

This is Womble - Womble was left in a bin, his fur was so dirty that it had grown across his eyes and given him a severe eye infection. Unfortunately, Womble was not brushed 3/4 times a week and his fur had become incredibly matted.

The Dogs Trust have helped Womble and re-homed him! :)

This is Cassie- Cassie was taken to the Dogs Trust at 6 years old. She had never eaten dog food. Unfortunately, her previous owner had always fed her human food and she had not been taken for a walk for 6 years.

The Dogs Trust have helped Cassie and re-homed her! She now weighs 3kg instead of 9kg! :)

We all got a certificate at the end of the Dogs Trust workshop to show that we now have an understanding of how to stay safe and be responsible around dogs.

Year 3 visit 'The Orbit'

Year 3 had a lovely day visiting The Orbit in Stratford. All the children were very brave and we made it all the way up to the top where there was an amazing view of London. The children could spot The Shard, The West Ham Stadium, The Gherkin, The o2, The BT Tower and The London Eye. We all then made our way down the Orbit (via the stairs) where we ate our lunch on the hill overlooking The Orbit. As the weather turned out to be so nice, we also got to enjoy ourselves and play in one of the parks.

Pompeii Adventure!

After learning about Pompeii during our topic on Volcanoes, Oliver Stay was so fascinated and intrigued, that he was lucky enough to visit Pompeii! He got to see Mount Vesuvius and the total destruction it left behind when it erupted hundreds of years ago in Pompeii!
Fortunately, the volcano is now extinct which meant that Oliver could walk all the way up to the Volcano's crater! He mentioned how he wished he had a jacket during his venture up the volcano, as the higher he climbed, the colder it got.
Hazel class really enjoyed listening to Oliver's journal which he had written during his visit. We also loved looking at all the pictures Oliver took, as well as browsing through the Pompeii book with 'Then' and 'Now' images. Thanks for sharing your amazing experience with us Oliver!

School Council visit the Houses of Parliament

The members of the School Council had the amazing opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament last Thursday. The pupils were shown how our country makes new laws and the rules of Parliament were explained to them. We were given our own private tour and even got to sit in the House of Commons to watch an ongoing debate. After our tour, we were allowed to have our very own debate where each member of the School council voted for a new law. We then debated and argued why this new law would/would not benefit the country. It was an extremely informative trip and I can say we all definitely came away having learnt something new!

'Did you know that in the House of Commons, when they all stand up it is because they have something they want to say?' - Ronnie, Year 3.

'The Houses of Parliament are divided into: The House of Lords, The House of Parliament and The Monarch,' - Leo, Year 4.

Using money in Year 3

This term, as part of the Financial Curriculum, Year 3 have been working hard to learn how to use money in practical contexts. They have investigated all the different ways to make amounts of money and have played customer and shopkeeper!

Here you can see children using a range of mental strategies to find different amounts of change.

"It was really fun and interesting to learn all about what using money actually meant in the real world. I now feel confident to go shopping and use money myself!"

Sacha, Willow class

"I really enjoyed playing shopkeeper, it helped me understand how important it is to give the right amount of change."

Olivia, Willow class

Well done Year 3, make sure to keep practising using money at home!
