Broadford Celebrates Black History 2024 - 'Golden' Music Video

At Broadford Primary, we explored this year's theme for Black History Month, 'Reclaiming Narratives'.

The message of acknowledging the journeys of cultures and taking charge of how you want to remembered echoed throughout the school and we chose to make a music video to the song 'Golden' by Jill Scott.

From Nursery to Year 6, our Broadford children are bringing joy to our screens.

Enjoy!

Broadford Celebrates Black History Month

October brought us many joys this year and one of them was the celebrations of Black History Month.

Black History Month is a momentous occasion to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black people to British society.

Watch Broadford's Whole School Celebration Dance

Song: Jerusalema by Master KG

“I enjoyed dancing to Jerusalem because it was really fun and easy to learn. I love the fact we danced for Black History Month.’ Karimah, Lime

Black History Month's theme this year was, Saluting our Sisters.

Each year group chose a black woman of influence , to research and acknowledge from categories such as Women Who Lead, Innovators and Entrepreneurs, Women Breaking Barriers, Women Who Move Mountains, Sheroes Among Us and Pioneering Voices.

Below are some examples of the Black and Mixed Heritage women that were celebrated throughout the school.

Sheroes Among Us - Halle Bailey

.

Women Who Lead : Floella Benjamin

“She was a good person, she helped lots of people." - Darcey

“She really believed in herself.” - Victoria

“Floella was the first TV presenter with beads in hair! ”- Ronnie

Innovators and Entrepreneurs : Karen Blackett

"It was interesting to learn about Karen Blackett and I enjoyed the art that we did !" - Qhaleed

Women Who Move Mountains : Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock

“We learnt about the scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock. I was impressed with how long she studied for and how much she knew about space.” Olivia

Acknowledging some of these aspirational Black women and coming together in unity to dance was truly enjoyable!

Science Week - Year 4 and Reception

This Year's Science Week theme was GROWTH. Year 4 and Reception were buddy classes during Science Week last week and had such a great time learning together!

Activity 1: The children from Year 4 came down to Reception to measure the difference between their feet and hands. The children in Year 4 were paired up with children in Reception and they supported the children with drawing around the outside of their feet/hands and counting along a ruler.

The children in Year 4 then recorded their data ready to graph and analyze!

On Red Nose Day, in partnership with Science Week, the buddy classes met up again for a mile run in the sunshine! The Reception children sure put the Year 4's in their paces as they sped around the field.

A Reception Scientist was around to help out!

'I loved having a buddy in Reception, it was great fun!' Isla, Larch

'It's funny how people grow at completely different rates, you could be in Reception and have bigger feet than someone in Year 4!' David, Ash

Well done to both Reception and Year 4 for a great, fun filled, Science Week!
