Year 3 are transported back to the Victorian times!

Yesterday, the children in Year 3 took part in a Victorian workshop. In topic this term in Year 3 we have been learning all about childhood throughout different periods of time.

We have learnt all about what it was like for children in ancient Mayan times, the Victorian era and  children's experiences during World War 2.

The Year 3 children took part in an interactive workshop which took them through a day in the life of a Victorian maid. The children learnt all about different Victorian jobs around the home and what life was like without electricity! At the end of the workshop the children were taught some dance steps to a popular Victorian song!

The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and fully engaged with all of the role playing activities!

Cool Coordinates in Year 4!

For this past Summer Term, we have been learning about coordinates.

As our starter activity, we went outside to travel to different coordinates. We needed to record the direction of travel and how much across or along the axis was needed to get from our start point to our end destination.

The children had to be resourceful and use a birds-eye map view of the school to travel to their destinations. They also had to demonstrate their reciprocity skills as they worked as a team; well done Year 4!

"We always need to remember; along the corridor and up the stairs!" - Hannah, Ash

"I love coordinates and geography, they really make me feel like a navigator! Just like Matthew Henson!" - Adrian M, Larch

"Another word for moving coordinates is translation." - Iniya, Birch

Challenging Coordinates in Year 4!

Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed developing their map skills this year in geography. They have explored a range of different types of maps and looked at reading and plotting coordinates.

In order to support their learning, they all had so much fun playing their coordinate challenge game - where they each used a dice to roll their coordinates and plot them on a grid. The first one in the pair to plot four vertices of a square won the game. It was brilliant to see all of the children's friendly, competitive spirits!

"I love this game so much!" David, Birch

"I love playing this game, especially because I can play it with my partner" Ruby W, Birch

It was wonderful to see the children working effectively together; showing a perfect balance of resilience and reciprocity.

"The first dice rolled told me the x coordinate (along the corridor) and the second dice rolled told me the y coordinate (up the stairs!)" Layla-Rose, Ash

"This game is so crazy, I love it," Tavia, Larch.

Keep up the outstanding work, year 4!

Year 3 celebrate Eid

Yesterday, Muslim worshippers around the world celebrated the festival of Eid al-Fitr, commonly known as Eid, to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

As part of our RE lessons and during the afternoon the children learnt about the festival of Eid. The children then drew around their own hands and decorated them with henna patterns.

Faizah in Cherry- "Muslims remember Ibrahim sacrificing the lamb"
Elisa in Cedar- "The date we celebrate Eid changes each year depending on the moon."
Danny in Elm - "Eid is a festival of light"

It was lovely to see the children in their bright colours enjoying the activity and learning more about why Eid is such a special festival for Muslims.

Captivating Coordinates in Year 4!

This week in Geography we have been learning about coordinates; how to read them, how to find them on a map, and what they're used for.

We learnt that in order to find the coordinate (2, 3), the children need to count across the X-axis ('go along the corridor'), and then up the Y-axis ('up the stairs').

We looked at the school map, and travelled across the school to find certain locations.

"Geography was so much fun; the treasure hunt with the coordinates was so exciting." - Louie, Ash

"You have to go along the corridors (the x axis) and up the stairs (the y axis)." - Lukas, Birch

"This is so much fun! It's so interesting seeing the school all mapped out." - Tavia, Larch

Year 3 - Abstract Portraits!

This academic year so far has been quite 'chop and change' and our children have done a fantastic job and adapting and learning in these difficult times.

In our current Art unit, 'Portraits', the Year 3's have demonstrated how that which seems unusual and abstract can be a beautiful art piece.

The images below show a few examples of what can be interpreted as us now filling in the gaps of our lives that seemed absent.

Ranging from the academic, social or even emotional facets of ourselves, we are closing those gaps and making a beautiful picture!

Well done Year 3!

"I feel like a robot!" Mihai shares as he removes part of his picture away revealing a sketch beneath.

Spectacular Sporting in the Sunshine - Year 4

Year 4 have had such a brilliant afternoon in the sunshine developing their athletic skills. The children participated enthusiastically in a range of activities to improve their agility and cardiovascular fitness.

We were also so impressed with the excellent coordination that was shown when the children practised their ball work; they were able to work confidently with their teammates to demonstrate superb throwing and catching.

"I feel like I'm getting better at the trail run!" - Lukas, Birch

"Parkour was so much fun, I learnt how to sequence my movements." - Nicole, Larch

"Spinning the American football today was tricky but I managed to get it in the end!" - Iyinope, Ash

It was wonderful to see the children work so well together, demonstrating equal measures of reciprocity and a healthy sense of competition.

Keep up the amazing work, year 4!

Year 3's Stone Age Afternoon

As you may know, in Year 3 we have been using the book Stone Age Boy to frame our Literacy work this half term.

We are also learning about different historic buildings, including those buildings from the Stone Age.

This afternoon we decided to round off our learning on the Stone Age Boy with a celebratory Stone Age Afternoon.

The Year 3 children went outside and had a real campfire to enjoy whilst we read them stories of a similar nature to the Stone Age Boy. We had learnt about what the Stone Age people used fires for during our time reading Stone Age Boy.

We then came inside and our classroom had been transformed into a cave art painting extravaganza! Children either drew on brown paper on their tables or their tables were turned over for them to draw as if it was a real life cave!

The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so did we!

In History this term, we continue with our focus topic - 'Buildings'. We have been exploring the Stone Age and finding out many interesting facts about the past!

This week, Year 3 went wild with whatever materials they could find in their homes to recreate Stonehenge.

Ranging from paper and Play-Doh to Lego and dominoes, our 'Broadford Architects' have out done themselves.

"This was the first thing I did for the day! Anything I can make out of Lego, I will!" shares enthusiastic Architect.

We look forward to when we can recreate Stonehenge in school together!

Diwali Rangoli Artwork in Year 3!

In celebration of Diwali on November 14th 2020 in Year 3 we have been learning and creating some artwork.

The children learnt all about the story of Diwali and why Sikh and Hindu people celebrate the festival. They had lots of fun putting their creative skills into practice when creating their own Rangoli sun catcher patterns.

"Diwali is the festival of light" - Viviana

Here are some of the wonderful Rangoli patterns created by the children using card and tissue paper.

Cherry and Elm class produced some beautiful designs and came up with really creative patterns.

In Cedar class the children created lots of different patterns and thoroughly enjoyed creating their Rangoli sun catchers.

It was lovely to see all of the children fully engaged and excited to learn about a different religion!

Diwali is celebrated this Saturday 14th November! Happy Diwali.

Black History Month in Year 3

This month is Black History Month.

In order to celebrate our schools diverse culture, particularly in Year 3, we celebrated Black History Month with an African Drumming Workshop! It was a great way to get everybody involved through the subject of music - something Year 3 really enjoy.

We also used Art as a way to explore different hairstyles; celebrating black culture and trends.

We have also been having lots of different conversations with the children, including whether they feel represented in our curriculum.

It has been a great way to bring the children together and to get a great discussion going!

Throughout the next few weeks we will be using some of our subjects to explore more about Black history - stay tuned!

Bread Tasting in Year 3

Today in DT Year 3 tasted lots of different breads to see which one they preferred.
We rated them based on smell, softness and taste.
The children used their scores to then help them decide which one they will use for their own sandwich.

We can’t wait to create our own sandwiches!

Watch out for them coming home in the next few weeks!

Year 3 -Celebrating Chinese New Year

In Year 3 we explored Chinese New Year by painting one of the icons from the celebration; the Chinese dragon. The children were encouraged to use some of the techniques that they had been using over the last few weeks in their art lessons.  They were colour mixing and using specific brush strokes to create a suitable looking dragon.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the main Chinese festival of the year. As the Chinese use the lunar calendar for their festivals the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. The date corresponds to the new moon (black moon) in either late January or February. The spring festival celebrates the start of new life and the season of ploughing and sowing.
Traditionally, celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon, when it is at its brightest. The first week is celebrated with visits to friends and family following special traditions designed to bring good luck. The second week ends with the Lantern Festival on the evening of the 15th day of the lunar month. In China, the public holiday lasts for three days and this is the biggest and most extravagant celebration of the year.
The Chinese calendar is different from that used in the United Kingdom. It is made up of a cycle of twelve years, each of them being named after an animal. This is very like our signs of the zodiac or star signs. Some people believe that people born in a particular year, such as the Year of the Dog, will have some of the characteristics of that animal.

Year 4 Rainforest project

In Geography, Year 4 have been learning about the rainforest. This week, they have been learning about the different layers of the rainforest which are emergent, canopy, understorey and forest floor.

The children were then challenged to apply their new knowledge in Art and design. They worked in groups to design and create their own models of the rainforest which, as you can see, are coming along brilliantly!

We hope that you love their creative work as much as we do. Well done year 4 and thank you to all parents/carers who donated boxes etc to support this project.
