Year 4 TTRS Challenge!

Calling all Year 4 parents!

We are holding a competition over Easter to engage the Year 4 pupils in times tables rock stars!

The aim is to encourage the pupils to do as many soundchecks as they possibly can over the Easter holidays. From each class, the three pupils who have logged the most soundchecks over Easter will receive a reward in the first week back at school.

This means even if your children have never completed a soundcheck before they are in for a chance to win!

Please remind and encourage the children to complete their soundchecks as this will increase their chances of being successful in their multiplication test this year.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Ready, steady, ROCK!

Fantastic Fractions in Year 3!

Fantastic Fractions

Year 3

This week, the children were exploring their new topic of fractions. The children started the week by learning about the mathematical terms 'denominator', which is the number of parts altogether, and 'numerator', which is the number of shades parts of a shape.  The children then used this knowledge to look at some visual examples and to write the fraction.

Zofia - 'I know that 4/4 is the same as 1 whole.'

The children have also been learning about unit fractions and non-unit fractions this week.

Onyeka - A unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator of 1.

Mavis - A non-unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is greater than 1.

Later in the week, the children learned how to compare and order unit fractions. They had to follow the rule which states that the 'larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.'

This was a tricky concept as the denominator may have a larger number e.g. 1/10  or 1/2.

10 is greater than 2, but as a fraction 1/10 is less than 1/2.

Nikita said 'When the numbers on the top and bottom of a fraction are equal, it's a whole!'

What a wonderful week of learning in Maths. Well done Year 3!

Soundcheck Stars!

Join us in celebrating some true times table rock stars! In Year 3 our pupils work hard in all areas of the curriculum and Math is no exception.

As well as working hard in lessons, our pupils strive to be the best rockstars they can be. All of the hard work and dedication that pupils put into their timetables is celebrated and they should be very proud of their achievements.

If you have any issues with TTRS, please feel free to ask and we will do our best to resolve any issues.

To continue the celebrations, the following pupils have received a certificate to acknowledge that their resilience and determination has resulted in them having an average score of 20 or higher in their soundcheck! This is an incredible score -  especially at this point in Year 3.

A huge round of applause to the following rockstars:

Ash:

Isabelle, Dija, Isabella, Jessica, Victor, Lawrence, Subhan, Abdulhafiz, Kosta, Onyeka, Millen, Munsha and Mishti.

Cedar:

Alesha, Alexandra, Alice, Anaelle, Iustin, Rohith, Mikail, and Jaabir.

Cherry:

Mateo, Nikita, Bernice, Joshua, Layla - Mae, Moyo, Yehor, Roza, Aisosa, William, Bella, Chirag, Tommy, Ambica, Lucas and Vikhyat.

Well done again for your resilience.

Don't forget - you can practise your soundcheck at home as well as in school! Keep developing your rock skills and your name could be mentioned soon ...

Magnificent Maths!

Year 3 have shown some fantastic resilience in Maths this week! We have continued multiplication and division since returning to school and have worked hard to demonstrate our skills.

We started the week by learning how to multiply a number by 10. This has evolved into allowing us to multiply a one digit by a 2 digit number! Today, we used whiteboards to partition 2 digit numbers and multiply them. We then added the numbers together to reveal our final answer!

l done Year 3! you have worked so hard and it shows through your fantastic work. Keep up the outstanding effort!

"Doing 20 x 8 is hard so I do 2 x 8 first, then multiply the answer by 10!" - Alice

"The whiteboards are good because if you make a mistake it doesn't matter!" - Hayden

"Using the counters helps me answer the questions quickly." - Noah

Math Marvels!

In Math this half term we have continued learning about addition and subtraction! Recently, our focus has been on using the column method to find the answers to sums. We started using the method without any exchanging or regrouping and have worked our way up to answering more challenging sums.

This week we have looked at adding and subtracting two numbers crossing tens. We have learned about exchanging one ten for ten ones when subtracting, and regrouping our ten ones into one ten when adding.

In todays lesson, we put our knowledge to the test by adding and subtracting across a ten! Pupils had to identify which operation they were asked to use, then use the column method to find the correct answer.

Year 3 you are smashing the column method at the moment! Keep up the brilliant work!

Cedar - "I use my whiteboard to find the answers, that way I can rub it out if I make a mistake" - Jaabir

Ash - "I find it fun when we exchange the tens because we get to cross out the numbers" - Millen

Cherry - "It is much easier to add when crossing tens. Subtracting is more challenging" - Vrisha and Harry

Year 4 are Flexible in Maths

In Year 4 this week we have been looking at place value, specifically 1000 numbers.

In this lesson, the children were taught how to flexibly partition.

For example:

2345 = 1000 + 1300 + 20 + 25

The children used counters and part whole models to support their learning and they were very successful!

"Flexible partitions is like partitioning, but you don't have to keep with the hundreds and thousand. I could say 1,200 + 2,009= 3,209", Kayden - Willow

"

"I get it now ! Once you make the number, you can just move the counters." , Olivia - Elm

“The counters really helped me to understand how the numbers were grouped.” Nyasa- Maple

Magnificent Maths!

This half term, the children in Year 3 will be practising and consolidating their knowledge all about place value.

The children have been working with numbers up to 1000, using scaffolds and manipulatives to help them.

They have used place value boards to write the numbers in numerals, draw the base ten to the correct value and show the number using dienes. Some of the children have used their resourcefulness skills to challenge each other to make the highest 3 digit number!

All of the children have been working extremely hard to complete their tasks and challenges, and the Year 3 team are very proud of them.

Using dienes to make the numbers was fun! - Jace

It was really easy to count with the dienes. - Duke

I enjoyed using the dienes to help me learn. - Mavis

Year 3 Stay and Learn

The Year 3 Team, would like to thank you all for attending our second Stay and Learn of the year.

The focus of the session was Maths, and it was lovely to see so many of you interacting with your children and applying different methods to solve the mathematical problems. The children were super resourceful when they were demonstrating how to complete the calculations and showed great resilience when they didn't always get it correct the first time.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out our feedback form.

I showed mum how I use dienes to help me in maths - Jasmine

I loved showing my mum how I find the answers - Max

I really liked using different methods to solve the problems - Kezia

Year 3 & 4 Maths Challenge 31.10.2023

1) Which of these numbers would you come to when counting in sixes from zero?
How do you know?

2) Would you get to some of these numbers if you were counting in sevens from zero? Which ones?
Can you explain how you arrived at your answers?

3) Could some of these numbers be reached if you were counting in nines from zero? Which ones?
Again, how do you know?

4) Would your answers be the same if you counted in the same step sizes but down from 350 in each case?
How do you know?

Looking at the image above and this time counting in 25s from zero, which numbers will you land on?
If you were counting in 25s from 10, which numbers would you land on this time?  How can you work this out without actually counting?

Welcome to Year 3

Welcome back to school Year 3!

What a fantastic first week of fun filled learning we have had!  All of the children have been amazing and the teachers are so proud of how easily they have adapted to the rules and routines of Year 3.

In Literacy, we have introduced our first story; A Tale of Two Robots, and the children have had a great time inventing different skills for their robots! They have used adjectives to describe and extended this to writing simple sentences before moving on to short paragraphs.

In Maths, the children have begun their new topic based on place value. They have explored partitioning using concrete objects and part whole models, as well as completing their tasks.

We put our creative skills to the test in DT this week, by using all kinds of junk modelling to design, create and build our very own robots!

I enjoyed building the robot because I like being creative. Ayla

Making robots is so much fun. Carter

I liked using the chalk in maths because I did sums I have never done before. Aariz
