Year 4 navigating London

On Wednesday, year 4 visited London as part of their geography topic, landmarks. In  groups of ten they planned the five landmarks they would visit and then in twos or threes, planned the route using trains, the underground and walking. The choices were The Shard, Golden Hinde, HMS Belfast, Tower of London, Tower bridge and London bridge. They all were excellent at their planning the route needed and were able to take the adults to the planned landmarks. After lunch in the Jubilee gardens, we made our way to the cable cars in North Greenwich where we crossed over the Thames with spectacular views. The children were well-behaved and a credit to our school. All the staff would like to thank the adults who supported us, as without them the trip would not be possible. I hope you enjoy a few of the photos.

The teachers in year 4 would like to say a huge congratulations to all the children for the results in the MTC. This year was phenomanal as 70% scored 25/25 and 92% scored over 20/25. They have worked so hard to achieve this and they deserve a round of applause! Well done! Individual results will be in their reports.

Year 3 - Colchester Zoo!

Today, year 3 visited Colchester Zoo and we had a brilliant day visiting all of the animals. We were lucky enough to see sea lions being fed, giraffes, elephants, lions, monkeys and more! Some of us were able to hold stick insects, walk amongst the goats and take a walk down to the flamingos. After stopping for lunch, we continued on our journey to ensure we explored the whole zoo including the llamas and alpacas, tortoises and chimpanzees. We represented the school amazingly; we were kind and polite to everyone we saw and tried out best to learn as many new facts as we could. We showed reciprocity by working together to see if we were stronger than an elephant! Thank you to all of our helpers for ensuring we made it around the zoo safely and we can't wait to share everything we did with you all at home.

'I enjoyed seeing the lions because they are a type of cat and I love cats!' - Lily

Year 4 Panto Trip!

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Year 4 children. The trip will allow the children to experience a pantomime at the Queen’s theatre. The Robin Hood production has sparkling sets, colourful costumes, tunes that everyone knows, lots of laughter and most importantly plenty of audience participation.

The Year 4 children will be visiting the Queen’s theatre on Thursday 5th December 2019, the performance will begin at 10:00am. All children should be in school by 8:45am as we will be leaving at 9:15am. We expect to arrive back at school at approximately 1.00pm so the children will need to either bring in a packed lunch or order a School packed lunch to eat as soon as we get back to school. The children will be given popcorn and drink during the show and will have the opportunity to have a piece of fruit.

The children will be travelling via bus to and from Queen’s theatre. The children will be accompanied by teachers and support staff from the school. Please ensure children have warm coats and are wearing appropriate footwear.

The trip costs £700 in total for the Year 4 classes so we are asking for a contribution of £10 per child to cover part of the pantomime ticket price. Please make your contributions on sQuid. If you have any questions or queries about payment, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
This is an exciting opportunity for the children to experience a pantomime. We thank you for your continuing support.

Elm Class - MOD Pizza

Wow, Elm Class had a great time at MOD Pizza Restaurant today. The children were intrigued to find out what MOD actually stands for...ask them while its fresh in their minds. The team at MOD made us feel really welcome.  Linking into out science topic and healthy eating the children had a tour of the kitchens behind the scenes and they got to explore the enormous walk in fridges and freezers (which they found very exciting!). We also had a close look at the stone bake oven and finally and most importantly after some hygiene guidance we all got the opportunity to make our own pizzas, which were amazing.  I'm sure the children would love to make homemade pizzas with you at home, please click this link for a recipe to do so. LINK

MOD Pizza chain encourage diversity and have a strong ethos regarding looking after there staff, they believe if their staff are happy then the customers will be happy. There is an amazing mural of photos on a large wall celebrating the diversity of their staff, they encourage people to be different!

Furthermore the children should have all came home with an empty pizza box and if you take it back there they can get another free pizza. Win, win situation!

Ash Trip!

Ash class had a fantastic time on their navigation trip last week. The children had spent many weeks prior planning their routes using google maps and the London underground tube map to work out exactly which landmarks they wanted to see and the most sensible journey to take.

They even researched where they would be able to go to the toilet and calculated the times spent at different locations to ensure they could fit it all in.

Between them, they managed to see:

Buckingham palace (including changing of the guard)
Hyde park (including the Princess Diana memorial fountain)
St. James' park
The Gherkin
The Shard
Tower bridge
The Tower of London
The millennium bridge
The London eye
Marble arch
Westminster bridge
City hall

A successful (and very tiring) day all round!

Well done children - your map work and reciprocity skills really shone throughout the day which you should be very proud of!

Birch Let's Navigate Trip

Birch had an absolutely fabulous day exploring London last week! The children's planning really paid off and their itineraries were simple to follow. They used their navigating skills to follow the tube maps and were counting down the stations until they had to exit, and used the larger maps around the city to identify which direction they needed to walk in. The teachers were blown away with the children's exemplary behaviour and positive attitudes throughout the day; they were responsible on public transport and represented the school well. Each group were extremely excited by all the buildings they saw and even kept count of all the extra things they were able to cover on top of their 5 locations!

Birch is ready for our trip!

Birch is super excited for our Trip in to London on Thursday! We have planned out our routes, identified nearby toilets and are ready to go! Today we worked in our groups to draw an outline of our trip including the locations we are visiting and the underground lines we are taking to get there. The children are looking forward to visiting a range of attractions tomorrow.

*Please remember to ensure you bring your lunch and a drink in a plastic bag, wear sunscreen and bring a jumper just in case!

Urgent Year 3 Parents - Please complete the trip form if you haven't already done so

Year 3 Trip - Orbit

Dear Parents and Carers,

At Broadford, we recognise the importance of an enriching curriculum inside and outside of the classroom and have therefore planned an ‘experience entitlement’ that will serve to enrich the learning of the children. In Year 3, the children are offered the exciting opportunity to visit the famous 21st century landmark, The ArcelorMittal Orbit in Stratford, on Thursday 4th July.

As well as going up The ArcelorMittal Orbit, the children will have a chance to walk around and explore the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford. A voluntary charge of £5 is needed to cover the cost of entry which needs to be paid via sQuid from tomorrow (25.06.19). Please ask the office should you require any assistance. If not enough contributions are made, the trip will have to be cancelled.

Children need to arrive in the morning at normal school time. We will be leaving Stratford at 1:30pm and will be back in school before the end of the day. We will endeavour to keep you updated via our Facebook page and blog. We would appreciate any parent helpers so please let your child’s teacher know if you are available to help.

We will be travelling by public transport. Children are required to wear school uniform and bring a packed lunch and water bottle with them. Please complete the form as soon as possible, especially if your child requires a school packed lunch so that the order can be placed in time to the kitchen.

Please follow this link to complete the form

Year 4 begin to plan their London Trip!

District, Metropolitan, Central, Circle or Jubilee?
Eastbound, westbound, platform one or platform 6?
Victoria Park, Hyde Park or St James's Park?

Decisions, decisions! Year 4 sure have been in a pickle this week! Our topic lessons have been all about the London Underground and train routes. Students have been using their resourcefulness and reciprocity to read the tube map, then begin to plan the quickest journey between stations. They have paid close attention to the key to use the correct name for the lines, to figure out where to interchange and whether there is wheelchair access.

These are extremely important skills as year 4 will be planning their own trip around London! We are in our groups and have decided on which locations to visit; now the exciting (yet challenging) part begins of creating an itinerary for the day. Stay tuned for updates!

Year 3 Curriculum letter Summer Term

Year 3 - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back and we trust you all had a restful Easter break. We hope you find this letter informative, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum.
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record
                                                             15 minutes practising spellings
15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have a new Learning Challenge for children to attempt this half of the Autumn Term. All of the activities are based around a significant person, poem or painting relating to our topics. Children do not have to attempt every activity but instead select the activities that they are most interested in and compile a project that reflects the extra time and effort that they have put into their challenge. We hope that children will take their time with the challenge and be proud of the work they produce they should hand this into their teacher at the end of the half term.

Spellings:
Spellings will be given out on Mondays. The children should practise their words every evening. We encourage the children to write their words in sentences on the back of their homework sheet. Their spelling test will take place on Fridays. Children in Read, Write, Inc groups could have their spellings given out and tested on different days.
Rockstar Times tables:
Children will be completing their timestables daily in school at the start of each maths lesson. Please practise timestables with your children at home, they will be able to tell you which tables they are currently working on.

Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you have any questions about the topics being covered, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Taylor        Mr Nicol
