PSHE Curriculum: Growing and Changing 2025

After half term, the children at Broadford Primary School will all be focusing on ‘Growing and Changing’. This part of the programme is designed to help children make healthy choices and keep themselves safe during their school years and beyond.

From September 2020 relationships education became a legal requirement; parts of sex education were already legal requirements before this time, within the National Curriculum. The design of the programme has taken into account the requirements of the statutory guidance, up-to-date best practice guidance, and the needs of our children

Please find below information specific for your child. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher.

Homework Expectations at Broadford Primary School

At Broadford Primary School we believe homework is about balance.

We understand that homework can be an ideal opportunity for consolidation for some, a battle for others, an opportunity for creativity for some of our pupils or quality time for carer and child in what can often be a very busy week.

Daily Homework Expectations
There are home-based tasks that we know help your child at school.  These are fundamental and must be completed every day.  Please speak to your class teacher if you need guidance.

These are 'on average' expectations:
- 15 minutes of reading per night (EYFS. KS1 and KS2)
- 15 minutes of mathematics per night (KS1 & KS2)
- 15 minutes of spelling per night (KS1 & KS2)

Other Learning Opportunities at Home - optional
Click on the year group link to take you to to a booklet of home-based learning.  It contains ideas linked to reading, maths and other areas of learning.

Y1 - Y2: Homework Bingo - optional
We understand children have commitments outside of school but if you have time, children in KS1 are encouraged to take part in 4 or more learning tasks from the Bingo cards at home.  This will be celebrated at school.  Please follow this link for this term's Homework Bingo.

Y3 - Y6: Worldly Wise Challenge - optional
Children in KS2 take part in weekly Worldly Wise assemblies where they learn 'a little about a lot'.  The Worldly Wise Challenge is an opportunity for children to carry out further research linked to the half termly topic.  Please follow this link for more information on this term's topic.

Fact Hunter and SPAG Detectives - optional
Each week, children can solve a SPAG error or complete their own research for an interesting fact on a given topic (click here to see this term's).  In recognition of applying SPaG skills to real life situations and investigating crimes against the English Language AND in recognition of insatiable appetite for knowledge
and ability to sniff out amazing facts, children will be celebrated in school with their peers.

Worldly Wise - Optional Homework Tasks

Every week, pupils have a 'Worldly Wise' assembly where they build and grow their own body of general knowledge.  By knowing a little about a lot they will be able to place events and ideas in context in a variety of different situations.

Last half term, children found out about National Cuisines....it was very interesting!

The 'Worldly Wise' Challenge is an opportunity for pupils to complete further research and tasks linked to the half termly topic.  There are separate activities for Y3/4 (green sheet) and Y5/6 (blue sheet).  They can do as many tasks as they like and do not have to link to the landmarks we have explored in school but can be any landmark that sparks their interest. A copy of the challenges will be sent home this week.

This is optional, and on top of their daily 15 minutes of reading, 15 minutes of spelling practice and 15 minutes of times tables practice.

The pupils will receive a special 'Worldly Wise Challenge' certificate at the end of the half term on completion of a project that shows a significant level of effort and challenge undertaken by the individual child.

You pick what you research; you're in control!
We cannot wait to see where your learning takes you!

Wellbeing Journals in Year 4

In year 4, we have made sure that a core part of the children's curriculum has been to reflect on their emotions and take the time to focus on their wellbeing.

With that in mind, the children have been developing their own wellbeing journals, where they are able to draw or write about themselves, keep a record of their feelings and the things they are doing to look after themselves. We have found it so important for the children to think carefully about how they can cope with inevitable stresses of life (especially given the last year), work productively and fruitfully and positively contribute to their community - school or otherwise.

Today in RSE, the children enjoyed thinking about what makes them happy and things that they can do to get into the Green Zone.

"I like thinking about things that make me feel and the Zones," Tavia, Larch.

"I am so happy when I eat my favourite food," Iniya, Birch.

"When I am in the yellow, blue, or red zone, I know I need to use my toolbox to help me get back into the green zone. Like breathing deeply!" Livi, Ash

It was brilliant to see the children using their reflectiveness learning power so effectively. Keep up the brilliant work, year 4!

Comic Relief Day in Year 4!

What a fun day we had in Year Four! Jokes were told, laughs were had and we all looked so colourful and crazy!

Some top jokes from Larch; "What do you call a skeleton who won't work? Lazy bones!"
"Knock, knock.
Who's there?
 Europe.
Europe who....
What did you call me?!"

Ash's Jokes:

Two hedgehogs are in the middle of the road and they're by a zebra crossing. One says, "Don't cross here!" The other one says, "Why not?" The first one says, "Look what happened to this zebra!"

How does the man in the moon cut his hair?
Eclipse it.

Birch's Jokes:

Why did the chicken nugget cross the road?
Because he wanted to get to the other side.

This week in Year 3...

This week in Year 3 we have been getting stuck in with some exciting learning!

This term in Science the children will be learning about Plants.

The children were given a plant to look at and they had to try to name the four main parts using their previous knowledge.

After discussing what the four parts were, they labelled their own plant with the correct names - stem, roots, leaves, flower.

Also this week, we have been creating our very own aliens to go along with our text in Literacy 'Chocolate Planet'.

From now on our E for Excellence assemblies will look a bit different, so today the children were treated to a Zoom E for Excellence assembly with Mrs Nicholls!

Internet Safety Day 2020

Internet Safety Day 2020 at Broadford!

We celebrated Internet Safety Day at Broadford with some great in class discussions about keeping safe online, and Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were treated to fantastic presentations from our digital leaders.

In class, the rest of the school completed activities that reinforced ideas about how to act online and how best to keep safe.

Please keep these discussions going at home!

Team work in Year 3

During a PSHE lesson the children in Year 3 demonstrated super reciprocity. They were asked to complete puzzles in a group, but in complete silence with no hand signals.

Madalina said “I just had to tell myself over and over not to talk, but in my head.” Hannah said “I didn’t have my own puzzle so I helped others with theirs.”

We will be continuing our PSHE topic on Getting On and Falling Out throughout this Spring term.

Cedar Class - MOD Pizza

Cedar Class had a fab time at MOD Pizza Restaurant today. The children did a fantastic job of creating their own pizza boxes, and personalizing them. Linking into our science topic and healthy eating, the children had a good look at the stone bake oven and most importantly, after some hygiene guidance we all were given the opportunity to create our own pizzas from scratch, which were amazing. The children chose a variety of toppings, including mushrooms, sweetcorn and pineapple! I'm sure the children would love to make homemade pizzas with you at home, please click this link for a recipe to do so. LINK

Naz the eco-warrior!

Last term, we were learning about how human behaviours can effect the environment in negative ways. This really opened the children's eyes to the responsibility they all have in keeping our environment clean and how we all need to take action if we want to preserve our beautiful planet.
After completing our own litter marches in class, Naz was inspired to extend her impact beyond the school gates. Impressively, she took it upon herself to clean up a local park to avoid plastic pollution which she knows can cause harm to animals as well as being very unsightly.

What a brilliant role model! Keep up the good work and remember:

"SMALL ACTIONS, BIG CHANGE"

Year 4 Litter March!

The Year 4 children have been keeping our local area clean and tidy recently by carrying ou regular litter collections. Amazingly, on our first litter march they gathered 11 bags of rubbish in just one session!

The children have learnt about the effect of plastic on the planet and how it can cause serious harm to living creatures in the wild.

"This is so upsetting" said Naz as she watched tonnes of plastic being poured into landfill.

The children have truly impressed their teachers with their determination to make a difference and keep pour local area clean. They have willingly used their lunch times to collect rubbish, even begging their teachers for more rubbish bags!

"I need to pick this up it could get into a birds tummy" explained Lewis.

Well done Year 4 you eco-warriors!

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

World Book Day in Year 3

The children had an amazing day today.  They took part in some lovely activities and their costumes were fab.  It was great to see so many of the children really thinking about their favourite character and dressing as them.

The year 3 children were really excited about reading to the Reception children, and they made an effort to choose texts that would engage the children.  The confident readers that are reading every day at home really shone with their expression and fluency.

In the afternoon the children took part in various reading linked activities including designing a book token and decorating the class doors.  The door decorating competition is a whole school initiative and the children took great pride in the designing and decorating.  Sequoia class chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Hazel Class chose Matilda. We can't wait to hear which class won.

We certainly celebrated reading in style!

Year 3 - Scientists

The Year 3 children have been scientists this week as they continue to explore forces. They have been exploring magnets and building cars propelled by balloons. During the lesson on magnets the children have been reflective. George said "Look this magnet is so strong it can pick up the pencil pot!" and Jacob said "You need two different ends of the magnet for them to attract".

In every magnet there is a magnetic field. This magnetic field is invisible and it is the force that you can feel when magnets in your hands attract or repel. The ends of the magnet are called the north and south poles.

In Hazel Class, pupils worked in teams to build a car propelled by balloon power! Taking the friction of the floor into account, students used skewers, straws, cds and tape to construct their models...

There were some fantastic results and certainly a lot of resilience during this task!

Both Hazel and Sequoia have had some great experiences in science recently and we hope they have been telling you all about them!
Have a fun half-term, and we'll see you when you get back. If there's one thing you do over the break, start a new book and who knows? You might even finish it in a week!
Remember to sign your reading records too.
Miss Taylor, Mr Nicol, Mrs Marchant, and Mrs Bradley :)
