Year 3's Star Writers!

Year 3 were absolute superstars last week as they planned their folktales entitled "The Enchantress of the Ringing River".

The two children who particularly impressed us in Sequoia and Hazel this week were Elliott and Megan.

Elliott's plan involved an innovative way to cross the ringing river without the evil enchantress hearing. He planned for the herdsman (the hero in his story) to drop a magical stick in the water, which would make the river disappear!

In Megan's plan, the herdsman plays a magical flute, which calls special birds to fly the herdsman over the river!

We were so impressed with all of the creative ideas Year 3 came up with. We definitely have some amazing imaginations in Sequoia and Hazel!

Great job, Megan and Elliott!

Willow class star writer

In Willow this week, our star writer is the amazing Daniel Tonu. It is no surprise given the fantastic information text he produced on mythical creatures. In big write, the children had a selection of beasts to choose from, including  Medusa, Hydra and the remarkable Minotaur and they had to select only one to write about. Not only was Daniel's presentation impeccable (as always, hence recently earning himself a pen license), but within his writing he was able to use a range of openers, appropriately grouped information into pargagraphs and sustained a formal tone throughout. Daniel, your information text was a pleasure to read! Keep up the great writing.

Willow class star writer

Our star writer in Willow this week is the phenomenal Finley Livingstone after producing a suspense filled episode of Sugarcane juice. Finley proved in this piece of writing that he has all the tools needed to be an independent author, oozing with flair. Although he successfully met the success criteria - adding speech, varying his sentence lengths and using metaphors - he went above and beyond to flaunt how capable he is at writing. He particularly impressed me through his use of an if, if, if, then sentence type, which was not required of him. After the writing process, Finley reflected on his episode, contemplating ways in which he could uplevel his writing, which is a key asset of an effective writer. Keep up the awesome writing! In the famous words of Bruno, "that's what I like."

Willow Class Star Writer

Willow Class Star Writer

This week in Willow, our star writer is the phenomenal Samanyu Handoo. Before half term, we were focusing on newspaper articles in order to eventually create our own. To begin with, we published an article on the opening of Dr Barnardo's homes. Following this, on the last Friday of term, we completed a progress test to assess how well we had grasped the features of newspaper articles. This time, the children had to imagine that they were adults and had achieved an amazing feat, which was being reported about. Mr Handoo decided to write about his future feat as a cricket star and managed to score an amazing 84/87 on it! Remarkable.

Samanyu was able to incorporate the features of a newspaper article: successfully, he created a coherent 5W paragraph, used the passive voice throughout and ensured he was consistent in applying a journalist tone. Samanyu, you had me hooked throughout your article and maybe one day, you will become a cricket star, and this article will be published. Thank you for making your article a pleasure to read, keep up the great writing!

Willow Class Star Writer

This week in Willow, our star writer is the fantastic Frankie Woolnough, after producing an outstanding newspaper article on the capture of Robin Hood. It is no wonder that Frankie managed to produce such an incredible piece of writing, after she fully engaged and participated in the lesson. Constantly, Frankie contributed to class discussion, worked well with her partner and shared some fabulous ideas that other children could magpie.

In her writing, Frankie was able to apply the features of a newspaper article. She was able to use a passive voice, use a range of adverbials and ensured that she remained in a journalistic tone throughout, rather than writing her article as if it was a story.

Keep up the great work ethic Frankie and your writing will continue to soar! A pleasure to read.

Willow class star writer

This week in Willow, our star writer is the incredible Finley Livingstone. Although Finley is an extremely capable writer, after examining his progress test, it is evident that Finley has exceeded himself, steering clear of the 'Lazy writing' bracket. Indepently, our own little author, managed to produce an incredible story based on Space in 2117. Successfully, Finley incorporated a range of sentence types, ensured he used a range of adverbials to add variety to his writing and strived to embed a range of descriptive techniques throughout, including similes, metaphors and personification. Outstanding writing Finley, that's what I like to see... 24K Magic! Keep it up :)

Willow class star writer

This week, our star writer is the absolutely phenomenal, the one and only... Libby Northwood. Libby has created an amazing, publishable worth futuristic story. I was particularly impressed with the build up she created, which she was able to do without any adult supervision. Although I modelled on the board, she steered clear from my example, adding her own flare and independently challenging herself to produce an amazing piece of writing. She included a 2 pair, a range of adverbials, similes, and I particularly like the metaphor she also managed to include to describe the robot... A pile of metal! Keep it up Libby, a pleasure to read :)

This week, our star writer is the unbelievable Jessica Simpson after she produced an amazing setting and build up for her futuristic story. She ensured she provided a descriptive setting for her reader to feel like they were immersed in the story, as opposed to creating lists. In order to do so, she used a range of adverbials, similes and even metaphors. Additionally, she managed to incorporate humour into her writing. I particularly liked when the teacher in the story told her class that they were the best class in the school (just like Willow!) You can now not only independently write, but also add your own flare. Super Jessica, keep it up :)

This week in Willow, it was no wonder that the wonderful Ellis Drummond was our star writer. Ellis, your writing has improved significantly, to the point where you are now producing publishable worthy work! This was evident in the playscript you produced this week. Not only did you incorporate amazing speech between your characters, but you also successfully implemented stage directions: showing not telling, perfecting the mannerisms and behaviour of each character and allowing me to visualise being in the courtroom with them. Keep up the superb writing Ellis!

Willow Class Star Writer

Undoubtedly, our star writer in Willow this week is Mia Gallagher. Mia, your writing has improved significantly and has progressed incredibly so that you are now able to  independently write AND produce work to a high quality, as opposed to quantity. This was clearly evident in the setting of the castle room, in which you challenged yourself to use a tell:show 3 and even, without prompting, embedded a relative clause to supply extra information for your reader. Superb writing Mia, I hope to see you continue this in the future :)

This week in Willow, our star writer is the wonderful Weronika! It is no shock given the phenomenal biography she produced based on Queen Elizabeth II. Successfully, she incorporated a range of openers, subtitles to structure her writing and even relative clauses, to embed extra detail throughout her writing. It was a fabulous piece and really proved how much your writing has progressed. A pleasure to read Weronika, keep it up! :)

Willow Class star writer

This week, it has been decided that Lillie Mersh is our star writer, based on her biography of Fred the Bogeyman. Lillie, your writing has improved significantly, allowing you to produce exceptional work. You ensured you met our success criteria and included all the features expected of a biography: writing in third person, in past tense and in chronological order. Not only that, but you included a range of sentence openers and alternative nouns to engage your reader and, remarkably, incorporated a 2 pair sentence and a range of relative clauses. A superb effort Lillie, I hope to see writing of a similar quality (if not even better) in the future! Thank you for making it thoroughly enjoyable to read.

Willow Class Star Writer

Despite Willow making it increasingly difficult to select one star writer, we are proud to announce that Deniz Huseyin has stolen the title. Deniz has produced an absolutely phenomenal retell based on the story of The Bogeymen and the Trolls next door. Not only did he manage to incorporate the features expected of him: paragraphs to structure his writing, varied openers, alternative nouns, correctly punctuated speech and even our chilli challenge this week, to use a tell: show 3 and a show not tell, BUT he also implemented humour into his writing!

In consideration of the humour threaded throughout his work, I particularly liked:
'Dave had bad memories of Trolls. Once, he went to a shop and got humiliated by a Troll for what he was wearing (a yellow t-shirt with flowers).'

Keep up the great work Deniz. I can't wait to now read your new episode of the Bogey and the Trolls!

Willow Class Star Writer

Willow class star writer

This week, Willow's star writer is the fabulous, future Roald Dahl... Samanyu Handoo. As always, Willow made this a difficult decision to make. However, Samanyu fought hard to attain the title, producing an absolutely mind blowing, finalised piece of writing on whether to conserve or develop on rainforest land. Sam, the advanced level of language you incorporated, especially your alternative nouns, was incredible, the structure of your ideas allowed you to present convincing arguments and you used appropriate conjunctions to link and strengthen your ideas.
Keep up the great writing Samanyu, I expect to see even greater things from you in 2017!

Willow class star writer

Although Willow made it a particularly difficult decision this week, the wonderful Mr Ellis Drummond is our star writer. Ellis, your writing has improved significantly,  evident through your balanced argument: to conserve or develop on rainforest land. You posed an extremely powerful argument, engaging and forcing your reader to make an informed decision. You effectively used a range of rhetorical questions, implemented a variety of appropriate conjunctions and successfully used the PEE model to structure your ideas. Your writing certainly did not fall into the big L (lazy) category! This can only mean one thing Mr Drummond... Onwards and upwards!

This week, our star writer is the amazing Abena Pim-Wusu. Evident from the balanced argument Abena  produced, it is clear that her writing has improved significantly. It is certainly one to be proud of. Successfully, Abena used a range of alternative nouns to engage her reader, used various conjunctions to link her writing and effectively implemented the PEE model to add structure to her writing. Abena, it was a pleasure to read and I hope your exceptional work ethic and attitude towards learning continues!

This week, Willow are proud to announce Lea Cerqueira as our star writer! Lea, your writing has  improved significantly and you have made astounding developments and progress, particularly evident in your version of the utterly bizarre poem... The Magic Box.  Crazy, yet realistic you successfully incorporated the poetics devices we were aiming to use: onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration and similes. I particularly liked 'I will put in my box... A fairy flying frantically across a blanket of coal.' Not only did you use alliteration and an adverb, but you also challenged yourself to include a metaphor to describe the midnight sky. Keep up the fantastic work Lea!

Willow class star writer

Move over Miss Taylor, Miss Libby Northwood is here with an absolutely amazing set of instructions on 'how to train a troll.' Last week, during Big write, Willow focused on producing a set of high quality, clear instructions. Although everybody in Willow class achieved this (earning themselves each a merit) Libby exceeded this aim. She successfully incorporated the use of alternative nouns, included a range of sentence openers (as well as adverbials of time) and even challenged herself to use a variety of sentence types. I was particularly impressed with her 'the more, the more' and 'double ly' sentences that she threaded throughout her text. An exceptional piece of writing Libby, your best yet and you made it an absolute pleasure to read and mark. Phenomenal.
