Year 3 Celebrate World Book Day

Year 3 have had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day. The children were immersed in stories throughout the day, taking on roles of different characters as well as discussing their likes and dislikes about different genres and thinking about what makes a good book.

The children began the morning, with a mini fashion parade to show off all of their wonderful costumes and pyjamas before moving on to design their bookmarks. The theme of the day was read your own way, and the children embraced this through spending time reading either alone, with a friend or in a small group. The learning continued outside, with the children taking part in a book treasure hunt.

What a fabulous day we had in Year 3!

Year 3 Library Visit

During this half term, the Year 3 children will have the opportunity to visit Harold Hill Library. We will be walking to and from the library in our class groups during the morning. Due to limited space within the library, we will be visiting one class at a time.

Ash Class - Tuesday 28th January

Cedar Class -  Friday 31st January

Cherry Class - Friday 7th February

This will be an enhancement to our Reading curriculum, where the children will be immersed in stories, learn how the library system works and will be given a tour and talk from one of the local librarians.

During the visit, the children will be given a form to join the library, this should be filled in and returned to the library.

Thank You Year 3 Parents!

Thank you to everyone who came to our first Stay and Learn session for Year 3, it was lovely to see so many of you there.

Our focus was Reading and the ways in which the children can succeed in reading in Year 3. From discussing the national curriculum expectations, having a glimpse into what a reading session looks like in Year 3, and seeing the resourceful and reflective ways your children work both independently and together to answer inference and retrieval questions related to a picture or text. It was lovely for parents to be able to support the children to complete the reading tasks around the classroom.

We hope that you found the session informative.

Please find the slides from the Stay and Learn here.

Readers Theatre

Readers' Theatre is a reading activity which involves reading a script aloud in a small group. In Year 3, the children have been working on a script from their class novel 'Fantastic Mr Fox' and worked in small groups to take turns to speak. They have applied their reciprocity skills to work alongside others and their resourcefulness skills to act imaginatively.

During this session, the children were concentrating on maintaining eye contact with their audience and displaying confidence when reading aloud.

The Year 3 staff have been blown away by the children's acting skills, a huge well done to all of the children.

Authors Aloud!

On Wednesday, the children experienced a live author event, to celebrate Earth Day (22nd April) with a focus on climate and environmental literacy, by joining an online session with James Sellick, who read his picture book, There’s a Rang-tan in my Bedroom

There’s a Rang-tan in my Bedroom is a story about a baby orangutan that suddenly shows up in a young girl’s bedroom. At first, the girl isn’t best pleased, but when she finds out why the orangutan is there, everything changes. As well as the reading, James spoke about the important topic of deforestation for palm oil and helped children understand what they can do to help.

The children followed up the discussion by applying their resourcefulness skills to design posters informing others of the dangers of deforestation.

“ Orangutang’s arms can measure up to 7 feet long !” - Bruno

"My favourite part was when I got to design a poster to make people aware." - Lily

Perfect Planning!

Over the last week, Year 3 have been planning a local route, which is part of the children's learning experiences whilst at Broadford Primary School.

The children linked their learning to their Literacy lessons, using their reflectiveness skills to revise ideas and discuss what they have been learning. They demonstrated great reciprocity skills when working collaboratively and listening to others to check their routes.

Throughout the week, the children have had the opportunity to walk the routes that they planned when they visited Harold Hill Library. Luckily, the children planned their routes perfectly and we all arrived safely at our destination!

Well done Year 3.

Year 3's Guided Reading!

This term, year 3 have been reading 'Secrets of a Sun King' in Guided Reading. They have been using their retrieval, inference and prediction skills when answering questions about the text and they have used their amazing intonation skills to perform their readers theatre.

We started the term by puzzling together the front cover and predicting what we think the book might be about. We have then moved on to freeze frames, writing letters and practicing our fluency.

We can't wait to find out what happens with the cursed jar!

'Will Lil go to Egypt?' - Ayaan

'Will they find Tutankhamun's tomb?' - Gabi

'Is the jar really cursed?' - Hope

Reader's Theatre in Year 3

During our Guided Reading sessions in Year 3, the children have been taking part in Reader's Theatre, which is a highly motivating reading strategy that provides a context for authentic reading. The children read to convey meaning using their voice, facial expressions and gestures.

Reader's Theatre has helped the children to read with fluency, read aloud with expression and to build their reading confidence.

Based on our new class novel, Charlie Changes into a Chicken, the children have taken great delight in performing as different characters and inferring how the written text is said.

The children have used their reciprocity skills to work together to assign reading parts and decide how to perform the short extracts. As the weeks have gone on, it has been wonderful to see the children grow in confidence. Their performances have certainly been Oscar worthy!

"Readers Theatre is fun, we get to use our story voices!" - Evie

"We are working on our fluency skills." - Hope

"We added actions in our performance to make it interesting." - Veer

Year 3 - Monday 12th December

Good morning Year 3.

As school is closed today, the Year 3 teachers have been thinking about some activities that can keep you busy and your learning on track!

Reading - can you read a book or a newspaper article and summarise what has happened?

Maths - Can you recall your 4 and 8 times tables? Challenge yourself on Rockstars or challenge someone that you are with, taking turns to recite them. Can you write them in the snow?

Literacy - Put yourself in the role of a reporter and write a newspaper article about the school closing due to the snow.

The most important activity of the day is to have fun! If you build a snowman or manage to get out to play please send us a picture.

Stay safe and stay warm and have an amazing day of fun in the snow!

My Book Blog in Year 3

We wanted to remind parents about the brilliant online resource that helps develop children's vocabulary and comprehension: MyBookBlog.

Children are supported to choose a great book using MyBB’s blurbs, book trailers and the ratings and reviews of other children. Not all reading books will be available on there, but we will try and add books that we are reading in class, so that children can still utilise the resource.

We encourage the children read for at least 15 minutes every evening. You can support them to do this by reading a chapter or two to them, as well as listening to them read.

After the children have read a chapter, they can return to MyBB for support through the story. They blog their thoughts and feelings, grow their vocabulary, explore book- related non-fiction, and collect jokes and cards as they read.

To access MyBB, children can click here and use their own unique password formed of an animal, a colour and a number. This can be found in all children's reading records, but please let us know if the children need another copy. It might be best to bookmark the page, so that it is easy for the children to access it quickly.

We also wanted to remind you about our new, exciting reading initiative: 105 books to read before you leave Broadford. In Year 3, there are 15 high quality texts that we believe will have such a positive impact on the children. These are the books we recommend the children in Year 3 read:

Please remind the children that if their books need changing, they must let us know on Friday, so that we can quarantine the books over the weekend. We will then provide the children with a new reading book on Monday.

Stone Age Boy comes to Year 3

This half term Year 3 will be studying the book 'Stone Age Boy'. Luckily, this also matches up with the work we are doing in History!

This week we dived straight in.

After we were shown a small part of the book, we made predictions on what we thought would happen.

We then were given parts of the book and we had to sequence them in the right order.

When we had done this we then drew a story map using our own pictures and words.

We have also focused on our descriptive writing and used expanded noun phrases to describe the caves that were seen in the Stone Age Boy.

"The magical, mystical cave with a soft mossy floor" - Maya-Rose

"The gloomy, mysterious cave" - Ana K

Year 3 have engaged really well with the text and are excited for the next few weeks of learning!
