Birch's Last Week of Activities

Our final days of the Winter term were hectic as ever! Before our Church performance on Monday, all the year 4 children stocked up on takeaway pizza...

Then on Tuesday, Birch Class were given the task of replicating the world map, continent by continent. Charlie and James started with Africa...

Melisa, Evie, and Elinga worked on South America...

and Sophie, Deborah, and Morgan started with Asia...

Then this morning, Sydney, Sofia, Grace, Naleli, Sophie, and Summer Rose took on a COLOSSAL CHALLENGE! Showing fantastic resilience and reciprocity, they built a multilink line all the way from Birch Class down the corridor to Ash Class...

That wasn't the only bit of multilink fun in Birch... Paige, and Naleli also built several characters from The Simpsons throughout this week...

And then Paige and Evie built a multilink Mr Nicol and Mrs Spence!

Along with these tasks, we also explored mindfulness colouring, created our own Birch Class tapestry, and discussed a Zombie Apocalypse!

For 10 house points, answer the following question correctly: Exactly how many multilink cubes did it take the girls to reach Ash Class from Birch Class? Answer in the comments below!

We hope you have a relaxing break, Birch Class, and when you have a spare moment, get those Book Reports completed! We miss you already!

Mr Nicol and Mrs Spence :)

Merry Christmas Ash and Birch!

Dear Ash and Birch Class,

Wow! What another amazing half term!

We want to say thank you to all of the parents and pupils for your continued support.

It has been fantastic term and all of the children have not only made some excellent progress but also have worked together in a number of workshops and performances, showing excellent team work. We were incredibly proud of all the pupils in the Christmas Show and were pleased with how many parents, guardians and families came to support. We hope you enjoyed it too!

We also want to say a massive thank you for all of the cards, presents and drawings we have received for Christmas. We hope you all have a lovely and relaxing Christmas break.

We look forward to seeing you on the 2nd January :)

We hope you all enjoyed your cakes!

Stay safe please!

Kind regards,

Miss Daly and Mr Nicol

Year 4 Pantomime -She's behind you!

We have just returned from an amazing pantomime performance at the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch. The Beauty and the Beast performance was fantastic. During the show there was plenty of cheering, booing, singing and dancing!

We even managed to get Mr Nicol up and dancing in the audience.

"My favourite character was the evil witch, because her cackle made me laugh and I loved booing when she was on the stage." Ethan (Ash class)

"I loved when the ugly, hairy beast transformed into the prince at the end of the show." Esther (Birch class)

Year 4-Story Mountain madness!

Today in Literacy Year 4 worked in groups to plan a narrative using the images given in the 'secret' story-writing envelope. The pupils worked hard showing their reflectiveness skills, editing, evaluating and carefully planning their narratives.

Once the class had organised their images they wrote interesting fronted adverbials as an opener for each image. They all remembered to punctuate the fronted adverbial with a comma, which made Miss Daly and Mr Nicol very happy!

Ash class said, “We loved this activity!”

Reminder: Year 4 Beauty and the Beast pantomime

Year 4 Beauty and the Beast pantomime

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Year 4 children. The trip will allow the children to experience a pantomime at the Queen’s theatre. The Beauty and the Beast production has sparkling sets, colourful costumes, tunes that everyone knows, lots of laughter and most importantly plenty of audience participation.

The Year 4 children will be visiting the Queen’s theatre on Tuesday 19th December 2017, the performance will begin at 10:00am. All children should be in school by 8:45am as we will be leaving at 9:15am. We expect to arrive back at school at approximately 12.15pm. The children will be travelling via coach to the Queen’s theatre and will be returning by bus. The children will be accompanied by teachers and support staff from the school.

The trip costs £740 in total for the two Year 4 classes at Broadford Primary School. We are asking for a contribution of £10 per child to cover part of the pantomime performance and the coach. Please make your contributions on sQuid. If you have any questions or queries about payment, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Due to the estimated return time of 12:15pm, the children will be able to either bring a packed lunch or order lunch as normal at school and choose the red, green or blue option available for that day.
This is an exciting opportunity for the children to experience a pantomime. We thank you for your continuing support.

Yours sincerely,

Year 4 Dogs Trust- Maths workshop

Today in Maths, we were joined by Maria from the Dogs Trust to teach us all about looking after dogs. During the lesson we had to identify items what dogs need to be healthy and happy, estimate and calculate (using multiplication and addition) the cost of dog care items and explain what needs to be considered before getting a dog.

We applied our maths skills to real life maths problems. First, we were asked to predict how much a dogs cost a year to look after. Next, we made a list of all the things a dog requires throughout the year and guessed how much they would cost. Finally, we calculated the cost of the dog, including insurance and veterinary costs per year.

Did you know a dog costs on average £1300 a year?
Most dogs live up to 10-15 years old!

Code Breaking in Year 3!

Year 3 have been challenging themselves in maths recently by attempting to crack some tricky codes! They have been applying all of their mathematical skills, including their times table knowledge, to solve the puzzles!

After supporting each other and using all the resources available to them, they succeeded in cracking the codes!

Great work guys! I think you will all make some excellent detectives or spies one day!

Can you demonstrate your problem solving skills and solve this challenge at home?

Year 3's Star Writers!

Congratulations to our fabulous Star Writers, Michael and Leanne, in year 3 this week!

The future journalists made a superb start to their newspaper reports by writing a captivating headline and lead paragraph. They both ensured to included all of the 5 ws (the who, what, where, when and why) to capture the reader's interest immediately.

"I made sure my headline was short and snappy to hook the reader in." - Michael

"I remembered to include all of the 5 ws in my lead paragraph." - Leanne

I look forward to reading the rest of your brilliant reports this week!

Movember Out!

Thank you very much to everyone who donated money to a fantastic cause last month! Overall, the school hit its target of £50 by raising £55.97 for Movember! Enjoy some of the horrendous results from the end of the year:

What a moustache, Miss Estall! Excellent resilience!

Ash Investigate

Last week in Science, we worked in partners to create a cave for a bear to hibernate through winter. We discussed that in order for a bear to fall into a deep sleep, the cave would need to be dark and quiet. After we created our caves we investigated the light and sound of the cave using an app on the I-pad. We all worked well in our partners and shared our ideas fairly, showing reciprocity.

Miss Daly was very impressed with the team work in Ash class! Keep up the excellent work :)

Birch Class Get to Grips with Hibernation

This week, Birch Class sought out the differences between migration and hibernation, and then, using their awareness of reciprocity, created an environment which was suitable for a hibernating bear!

Working in pairs, the students chose their own ways of insulating their boxes using cotton wool, Styrofoam pellets and shredded paper. Harry noted that cotton wool was the best for keeping in warmth.

We made a lot of good mess and aimed to keep our boxes warm, quiet, and dark. Deborah identified that it was difficult to make the boxes completely dark since air holes and an entrance was needed for our bear.

Nevertheless, Birch class made some excellent hibernation boxes and were very proud to show them off. Sofia's even had a 'welcome' sign!

Good job Birch Class! Have a relaxing weekend and remember to fit in some reading :)
