Natural History Museum Trip - Year 3

On Monday 8th January, Year 3 had a fantastic day at the Natural History Museum! The children had an action packed day inside the museum, exploring and searching for fascinating facts in the mammals zone, blue whale room, the human biology lab and we had privilege of seeing the impressive whale skeleton hanging in the main hall of the museum.

.
Whilst exploring the blue zone of the museum, we were lucky enough to see some dinosaur bones and hold some of them too!

"I can't believe I got to touch a dinosaur fossil, and then I found out it was fossilised dinosaur poo!" - Vinnie O'Leary, Hazel

The children also ventured up through the giant Earth to the Earthquake and Volcano exhibition. It was brilliant to see Year 3 experiencing what it would feel like to be in a shop during an Earthquake as they entered into a Japanese shop at the time of an Earthquake.

We ended our time at the museum by being shown an Earthquake and Volcano demonstration. Pupils were told how earthquakes and volcanoes can occur. Some children were lucky enough to be picked to test out different equipment that measures earthquakes and volcanoes!

" I really loved creating a Volcano's lava flow in the show!" James Olatunji - Sequoia

Year 3 had an amazing day exploring and discovering new fascinating facts! We're sure that by the end of this term, all of the children will become volcano and earthquake experts!

Year 3 Colchester Zoo Trip

This Thursday Year 3 are delighted to be going on their final school trip to Colchester Zoo. We ask that children wear school uniform (weather appropriate) however they can wear comfortable footwear like trainers. Please ensure your child has a packed lunch and plenty of water to drink on the day. Children are allowed to bring a maximum of £5 to spend in the gift shop. This must be contained in a named purse or wallet and children are responsible for their own money.

Willow class star writer

Our star writer in Willow this week is the phenomenal Finley Livingstone after producing a suspense filled episode of Sugarcane juice. Finley proved in this piece of writing that he has all the tools needed to be an independent author, oozing with flair. Although he successfully met the success criteria - adding speech, varying his sentence lengths and using metaphors - he went above and beyond to flaunt how capable he is at writing. He particularly impressed me through his use of an if, if, if, then sentence type, which was not required of him. After the writing process, Finley reflected on his episode, contemplating ways in which he could uplevel his writing, which is a key asset of an effective writer. Keep up the awesome writing! In the famous words of Bruno, "that's what I like."

Healthy Eating Week in Year 3

Last week was Healthy Eating Week and to encourage children to eat healthy we made our very own fruit salad. We spoke about the importance of eating healthy and the benefits this has on our bodies. The children had great fun selecting their fruit and it was wonderful to see them all trying different types of fruit!

Paige the Project Superstar

Paige has amazed the Year 3 teachers and pupils this week by making her very own Rationing Book! As part of our topic 'World War 2', we have been learning about the food shortage during the War, which meant the people of Britain had to ration their food. Paige used her previous knowledge and researched what goes inside a rationing book to produce her very own one! She had even included the cut-out coupons and made the book look very old and fragile - as if it really were from World War 2!! Well done Paige, you certainly impressed us!

Year 3 Maths Party

We would like to thank all of the Year 3 parents who showed up for our Maths Party last Friday! It was a really successful morning and it was great to see the children challenging and competing against their parents!

If any parents have any questions about the resources used for the maths party then please feel free to speak to Miss Pearson or Mrs Claxton at the end of the school day.

Year 3 Curriculum Letter - Summer 1

Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 3 - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back to the new term! We hope you find this letter informative, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum.
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
  • 15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record
  • 15 minutes practicing spellings
  • 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have a new Learning Challenge for children to complete this half of the Summer Term. All of the activities are based around a significant person, poem or painting relating to our topics. Children do not have to attempt every activity but instead select the activities that they are most interested in and compile a project that reflects the extra time and effort that they have put into their challenge. We hope that children will take their time with the challenge and be proud of the work they produce. They should hand this into their teacher at the end of the half term.

Homework Help:
To assist children with their homework they can use ‘My Maths’. The login for this program is Broadford and the password is triangle. Each child has been given a personal login so they can access tasks that the class teacher has set for them. The children can also ask their class teacher for support or guidance with any project that they may be undertaking.

Spellings:
Spellings will be given out on Mondays. The children should practice their words every evening. The test will take place on Fridays.
Dates for the Diary:
On Thursday 20th April Year 3 will have the exciting opportunity to visit the famous 21st century landmark, The ArcelorMittal Orbit in Stratford as part of the enriching curriculum at Broadford. On Wednesday 26th April, Year 3 have a whole year group sharing assembly. It would be brilliant to see as many parents there as possible to celebrate all of the incredible work the children in Year 3 have done.

Parental help:
It is always extremely valuable to have parents who are able to volunteer to help hear the children read, or support them with their times tables. If you think that you are able to give some time to support the children then it would be warmly welcomed. Once again you will need a current DBS in order to work inside the school.
Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you have any questions about the topics being covered, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Claxton Miss Pearson

Pompeii Adventure!

After learning about Pompeii during our topic on Volcanoes, Oliver Stay was so fascinated and intrigued, that he was lucky enough to visit Pompeii! He got to see Mount Vesuvius and the total destruction it left behind when it erupted hundreds of years ago in Pompeii!
Fortunately, the volcano is now extinct which meant that Oliver could walk all the way up to the Volcano's crater! He mentioned how he wished he had a jacket during his venture up the volcano, as the higher he climbed, the colder it got.
Hazel class really enjoyed listening to Oliver's journal which he had written during his visit. We also loved looking at all the pictures Oliver took, as well as browsing through the Pompeii book with 'Then' and 'Now' images. Thanks for sharing your amazing experience with us Oliver!

Volcanic Eruptions with Hazel Class

This week, Hazel class finally got to erupt their volcanoes! They've been waiting a long time for this and the wait was definitely worth it. Using a mix of vinegar, water and fairy liquid, the children had to add in the final ingredient to make their volcanoes erupt....baking soda! You can see from their faces that they were fascinated and had lots of fun doing so!

'If it was a real volcano then the water bottle would be the conduit which is the part where the magma flows up' - Grace.

'Some of the lava oozed out of our volcanoes and some of them flowed down really quickly' - Tommy.

'I can't wait to show everyone at home how to erupt a volcano! It was so much fun!' - James.
'Some volcanoes do have really thick lava that trickles slowly down the side, so our volcanoes were similar to some in real life (minus the heat)' - Naleli.
