Year 3 Visit the Synagogue

Year 3 had a fabulous visit to the Synagogue this week, where we were warmly welcomed by the Jewish Community.

Both mornings were fun and  informative. We began with the children being shown around the different parts of the Synagogue, including the prayer area, where they were able to see and hold, the Torah and Scrolls. They looked at Hebrew writing and discussed how it was different from their handwriting. The children asked some very thoughtful questions and were extremely respectful at all times.

Every Synagogue has at least seven Torah Scrolls  - Theo

I learnt that the Ner Tamid light shines forever - Jace

The special scrolls were hidden behind the curtain - Roza

Year 3 Colchester Zoo

On Wednesday, Year 3 had a wonderful day seeing all of the different animals at Colchester Zoo.

First, the children had to decide within their groups which animals they would like to see and come up with the best route to take around the zoo. Then, we set off in our groups to find all of our favourite animals whilst learning lots of new and exciting facts along the way!

The children all got to have an up close and personal experience with the goats, and had the opportunity to feed and stroke them as they walked through the enclosure, this took resilience for some children, who had never experienced a large animal so close before. There was so much to do whilst at the zoo, including taking the zoo train into the lemur enclosure and feeding the parrots in the giant bird house!

We finished the day with a lot of tired, but very happy children!

'I loved seeing the ferocious lion!' - Tesha

“ The goats were so soft to touch !”- Carter

'I loved seeing the wolves because they were so close and we could see them eating!' - Max

Ash Visit Harold Hill Library

Yesterday Year 4 took a trip down to Harold Hill Library. We met RJ (Rob) Thompson, who is the author of the series 'The Uncuddibles'. Rob read some stories to us, showed us how he illustrates all his books using his iPad, and prepared us for some brilliant activities.

Some children wrote their own book covers and blurbs, whilst others played an Uncuddibles-themed board game. Other children drew their own Uncuddibles super-bear!

Thank you Rob for the pleasure of meeting you and reading your captivating stories.

Year 3 visit Colchester Zoo!

Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed their final trip of the year to Colchester Zoo. They had planned their route around the zoo in their groups and decided which animals and experiences they would like to see.

After they had decided what they were going to see, they all set off in their groups. Some children and the opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes, whilst others watched the penguin show!

“My favourite part was feeding the giraffes. I was quite scared at first but the giraffes were really friendly!” Fallon, Sequoia.

“I loved seeing the penguins and the sea lions. It was so cool when we walked through the tunnel and the sea lions swam around us!” Ethan, Sequoia.

Overall, Sequoia and Hazel had an amazing time and planned their day incredibly well. Great job, Year 3!

Natural History Museum - Year 3 Trip

Year 3 had a wonderful day at the Natural History museum last week!
We started our day off by exploring the museum first. We were lucky enough to visit most areas of the museum; dinosaurs, creepy crawlies, mammals & birds and the human body. The children loved making links to their own learning and were particularly excited (some scared) about the life-size and very realistic T-Rex in the dinosaur area.

"I couldn't believe how much the T-Rex looked like a real dinosaur! It was scary!" - Adam, Hazel.

Year 3 were also amazed at the life-size model of a Blue Whale in the 'mammals' area. We enjoyed exploring the birds too where many children discovered birds they had never heard of or even seen!

"Is that really how big a Blue Whale is? That can't be true!" - Conner, Sequoia.

We ended our time at the museum by being shown an Earthquake and Volcano demonstration. Pupils were told how earthquakes and volcanoes can occur. Some children were lucky enough to be picked to test out different equipment that measures earthquakes and volcanoes!
Year 3 had an amazing day exploring and discovering new facts! Let's hope they remember everything they have learned for our Volcano and Earthquake topic this term!

Year 3's Healthy Eating Workshop

This week, Year 3 were lucky enough to be visited by Warburtons to learn all about what healthy eating looks like. They first looked at what a healthy plate might look like, making sure that every meal is balanced with the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, dairy and fatty products.

The children were then lucky enough to make their own healthy sandwich! Before they could do anything they had to think about making sure the sandwich making environment was hygienic. They all washed their hands thoroughly and wore special nets to keep their hair away from the food. They, of course, found it absolutely hilarious when the teachers had to wear one too.

Once they had considered the importance of hygiene, the children could begin making their sandwiches using lots of different ingredients to fill them. It was very important for the children to try something new and they all did really well to include lots of healthy food!

'I put peppers in my sandwich even though I wasn't sure if I liked them. I'm looking forward to tasting them' - Charlie R, Sequoia.

'Buttering the bread was a bit tricky at first but when it got softer it was easy and I enjoyed it' - Megan, Sequoia.

'I loved choosing all the healthy food to put in my sandwich. I couldn't wait to eat it!' - Grace, Hazel.

'I liked wearing the hair nets because they made us look like real chefs' - Tyler, Hazel.

The Year 3s are now experts in making healthy food, with a certificate to prove it. I'm sure that they would love to help make their packed lunch, especially now that they are qualified to do so!

Hazel Explores "Why London Is Such A Cool Place To Live"

Why is London Such a Cool Place To Live?

On Tuesday/ Wednesday Hazel and Sequoia class had the opportunity to explore the amazing landmarks that make London so iconically cool and well known around the world!

However, prior to adventuring to London, students had to search directions on how to get there! Students used handy navigation mapping tools such as "Google Maps" and "City Mapper" to figure out which buses to take, which underground tube lines to get on, walking distances and proximity of time between each landmark. Students also practiced using navigation language such as: North, East, South, and West to describe directions in more detail. The 4 landmark categories that students trekked to were: Parks, Buildings, Bridges and Cathedrals.

Parks
Alisha, Ella, Micayla, Abbie, Emmanuel, Michael and Ethan explored Hyde Park, Primrose Hill, Green Park, Regent's Park and an additional park with Mr. Drakes and Ella's nan Sue.

"Walking through the parks reminded me of the importance and beauty of green space and nature."
- Ella

"My favourite part was when we walked through Princess Diana Memorial Fountain because we got to roll up our trousers, take off our shoes and get our toes wet."
- Emmanuel

"I loved rolling down the hills!"
- Ethan B

Buildings
Lelethu, Ty, Ethan, Megan, Fitzroy, Tia and Alfie visited: The Shard, The Monument,
The Golden Hinde and Sky Garden with Miss Moran and Miss Gibbs.

"The Shard is a tall glass building that looks like it can touch the sky."
- Megan

"The Golden Hinde was impressive because it had a dragon and a deer on it."
- Storm

"Did you know that there is a huge garden on the top level of Sky Garden that overlooks all of London?"
- Fitzroy

Bridges
Ella, Elena, Jack, Bradley, Teni, Charlie and Archie visited: The Tower Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Millennium Bridge and the Hungerford Bridge with Miss Byrne and Miss Wright
"My favourite bridge was Tower Bridge because not only is it so well known all over the world, it is one of the most beautiful bridges ever! It has bright blue cords, the gates open when a large ship has to enter, and it is very tall!"
- Teni

"I loved going on the boat that raced across the Thames River because we got to see the bridges up close!"
- Charlie

"The Millennium Bridge was fun to jump on because it bounces!"
- Bradley

Cathedrals
Martin, Elina, Yemi, Katrina, William, Harley, Alin (Absent) navigated to: St Martin's In The Field Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral and St. Paul's Cathedral with Miss Corrales and Miss Illot.

"My favourite cathedral was St Martins In The Fields because it was close to the gallery, to the water fountains and my name is part of the Cathedral name. Also, I had so much fun on this trip because I helped direct the group by reminding which buses we had to take, where to get off, and even helped Ms. Corrales choose a different set of directions when one of the bus stop routes were out of service."
- Martin

"My most memorable cathedral was St. Martin's In The Fields because there was so much attractions to look at. Besides looking at the cathedral, the gallery, and the water fountains, all of us got to hold a colourful bird called a macaw and posed with a human statue!"
- Yemi

"I enjoyed looking at St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral because they are designed very beautifully. At lunch time when we were sitting on the grass across from Westminster, my group and I cartwheeled all over the place. It was great because Big Ben was right behind us."
- William
