Birch Class Get to Grips with Hibernation
This week, Birch Class sought out the differences between migration and hibernation, and then, using their awareness of reciprocity, created an environment which was suitable for a hibernating bear!
Working in pairs, the students chose their own ways of insulating their boxes using cotton wool, Styrofoam pellets and shredded paper. Harry noted that cotton wool was the best for keeping in warmth.
We made a lot of good mess and aimed to keep our boxes warm, quiet, and dark. Deborah identified that it was difficult to make the boxes completely dark since air holes and an entrance was needed for our bear.
Nevertheless, Birch class made some excellent hibernation boxes and were very proud to show them off. Sofia's even had a 'welcome' sign!

Birch Strike a Pose for Perimeter
This morning, Birch Class took perimeter to a whole new level. Instead of measuring diagrams inside, we measured the perimeter of... each other! Working in centimetres and metres, Birch Class started off by finding the perimeter of their shoes (which was roughly around 50 or 60 cm according to Jaydon and Sydney), then moved on to all sorts of poses on the floor!
With only a 30 cm ruler to help them, lots of different measurements needed to be added in column method at the end.
'It was hard to measure around the head of someone because our ruler was straight and people's heads are curved,' observed Jorja.

By the time we had finished, the playground looked like some kind of maths crime scene!
With a sound knowledge of perimeter now demonstrated, we will work on compound shapes and area next week. This was a great finish to a great week for Birch Class.
Enjoy your weekend and remember to fit in some reading!

Hinduism Workshop
On Tuesday, Year 3 took part in a fantastic, informative workshop learning all about the religion of Hinduism.
The children learnt all about the Hindu gods and goddesses, performed a Hindu dance and had the opportunity to try on Hindu clothing.
The children all behaved superbly and came back in to class, following the workshop, in a reflective mood.
"I found out that it is important that Hindu's spend time being peaceful and calm every day." Zac Nickson, Sequoia
"My favourite part of the morning was having the chance to wear a Sari and put on bindi jewelry!" Ameerah Bashir, Hazel

Evolution and Adaptation -Dogs Trust
WOW!
We have had such an exciting afternoon in Ash class! Today, we were joined by Maria from the Dogs Trust to teach us all about how dogs have evolved and adapted from wolves.
Maria commented on how well behaved Ash class were and what fantastic listening skills they demonstrated.
There are not any photos of the wolf that dogs evolved from as it was over 130,000 years ago. The closest wolf to the one that dogs have evolved from, that we have access to images of, is the Gray wolf.
Did you know?
The DNA match of a Yorkshire Terrier and a German Shepherd to a Gray Wolf are both 95.5% !
We learnt the importance of being responsible when looking after a dog and played a hilarious game of charades.
Evie acted out fleas and worming tablets.
Ethan acted out feeding your dog
We also were introduced to some dogs that have not had the happiest life so far.
We all got a certificate at the end of the Dogs Trust workshop to show that we now have an understanding of how to stay safe and be responsible around dogs.

This is Splash - Splash is a 3 month old puppy and he was abandoned at the side of a road. Unfortunately, Splash does not have any fur and his skin is scabby and sore due to an infestation of fleas, that had not been treated.
The Dogs Trust have helped Splash and re-homed him! :)
This is Womble - Womble was left in a bin, his fur was so dirty that it had grown across his eyes and given him a severe eye infection. Unfortunately, Womble was not brushed 3/4 times a week and his fur had become incredibly matted.
The Dogs Trust have helped Womble and re-homed him! :)

This is Cassie- Cassie was taken to the Dogs Trust at 6 years old. She had never eaten dog food. Unfortunately, her previous owner had always fed her human food and she had not been taken for a walk for 6 years.
The Dogs Trust have helped Cassie and re-homed her! She now weighs 3kg instead of 9kg! :)

Ash’s mysterious magic medicine
In Literacy today, we wrote a poem inspired by the 'Song of the Witches' by Shakespeare. We all collaborated our ideas fairly and edited the poem showing reflectiveness.
Here is our version:
Mysterious magic medicine
Double, double toast and trouble;
Sprinkle, sizzle and bucket bubble.
Tail of silky, slimy, snake,
In the bucket bash and bake;
Eye of fish and head of frog,
Fur of lion and claw of dog,
Belly of panda and Hornet’s sting,
Canine of shark and Bat’s wing,
Hocus Pocus create some trouble,
Like a bath-bomb about to bubble.
Double, double toast and trouble;
Sprinkle, sizzle and bucket bubble.
Scorch it with a demon’s blood,
Mash it with a mole from mud.

A reminder for shoe boxes:
Year 4 Science afternoon
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are writing to inform you that on Wednesday 22nd November, Year 4 will be taking part in an experiment related to their current Science topic - Environment, Ecology and Evolution.
We have currently been learning about the evolution of animals and animal adaptation. Our next Science focus will be exploring hibernation and we would like each child to create their own cave. They will be taking into consideration the light, sound and temperature for a bear to hibernate over winter.
In order to make this activity possible we would like each child to bring in an empty shoe box that can be transformed into a cave during our lesson. All the other materials will be provided by the school.
Please bring all shoe boxes in by Monday 20th November. We are looking forward to seeing the finished cave designs!
Yours Sincerely,
Miss Daly Mr Nicol

Remembrance Day
This morning, each class positioned their poppies in front of the school to create our very own poppy field inspired by the sea of poppies at the Tower of London Remembers. Year 3 and Year 4 stood around the poppies in silence to show their respect and took a moment to remember all those who sacrificed their lives in the wars.
We also heard a poem about the poppies at Remembrance day, that was read by Sophia (Year 1).

Moana!
On Thursday, year 4 were the lucky audience of Moana. We all had a fantastic trip to the Vue cinemas at the Brewery in Romford.
We all walked sensibly to the bus stop and travelled on the 496 bus to the Brewery.
All the children behaved impeccably throughout the trip. They represented Broadford Primary School on public transport and in the cinema, showing reciprocity and respect.
Also, each lucky child was given a free child ticket at Vue. (Check school bags!)
I was very proud of how all the children in year 4 behaved on Thursday - keep up the excellent attitude. Miss Daly :)
We have voted "How Far I'll Go" as our favourite song from the film!
I've been standing at the edge of the water
Long as I can remember
Never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water
No matter how hard I try
Every turn I take
Every trail I track
Every path I make
Every road leads back to the place I know
Where I cannot go
Where I long to be
Measuring madness- Ash class
Today in Maths we all took part in an investigation.
Miss Daly asked us:
The total length of all of someone’s fingers is the same as the length of one of their arms.
Is this true? How can you find out?
As a class we decided that we should use our measuring skills.
First of all, we measured each of our fingers in partners.
Next we added together the length of each finger. Throughout the task we supported each other and showed reciprocity.
Finally, we measure our arms and then compared this measurement to our total length of fingers.
As a class we found that this investigation was false.
Nobody in the class had the same total length of fingers as the length of their arm.
Ash class all showed resilience and persevered when they found the investigation challenging!
Keep up the great work :)
