Yesterday, year 4 took off from Broadford on their epic odyssey to explore the landmarks of London! The groups travelled by foot, bus, train, and tube to see many famous London buildings including Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Shard, Tower Bridge, City Hall, and Millennium Bridge.
The photos from Ash class can be found here, here, and here. Birch class's photos can be found here.
Both classes used their navigating skills to direct their groups successfully around the public transport of the capital, showing acute resourcefulness and maturity. All staff agreed that behaviour was impeccable as always from our year 4 students. Also, a special thank you must go to Ms Ayodola, Ms Porter, and Ms Sibanda for lending a helping hand on the day.
Have a well-earned rest, get those reading records signed, and come back ready for our last half term of year 4! :(
Miss you already,
Miss Daly, Mrs Stallard, Mr Nicol, and Mrs Spence

Year 3's Star Writers
Congratulations to Naz and Kyla who are this week's Star Writers in Year 3! They both wrote outstanding biographies on Queen Elizabeth 11.
Naz thought carefully about how to lay her biography out, ensuring to use subheadings so that it was easier for the reader to follow. She even made sure to use a rhetorical question to hook her reader in!
"I like that I used adverbials of time throughout my biography to show when things happened. This definitely helped my reader understand the chronology of the events," Naz, Sequoia.
Kyla included some really interesting facts about the Queen's life and made sure that it was all written in the past tense and using the third person.
"My favourite part of my writing was when I used adjectives to describe how the Queen felt on her wedding day." Kyla, Hazel.
Great work, Naz and Kyla! We have definitely learnt a lot about the royal family this week!

Solid, Liquid, or Gas? Ask Year 4!
Last week, Birch and Ash class took to the field to demonstrate the movement of molecules in the three states of matter. After observing the change of ice into water, the students themselves became the molecules!
Grace observed that even though the molecules in a solid are in organised rows, they still move slightly. See if you can work out which state of matter these photo are representing!

Ash - Acids and Alkalis!
In Science this week, Ash class were introduced to their new science topic of Acids and Alkalis! The students had many questions about the nature of acids, how strong they can be, if they are dangerous and where they can be found in everyday life. Their investigation consisted juicing the oranges using their muscles and a pestle and mortar, then testing the juice for its level of acidity...
Having made a prediction at the start of the lesson, the students confirmed whether or not their prediction was correct. After testing the PH scale using the Universal Indicator paper, we decided to test the soap in the bathroom and some tomatoes in our class fruit bowl.
Fantastic work, Ash Class, we will continue Acids, and Alkalis next week!

Year 3's Star Writers!
Congratulations to Nina and Summer who are this week's Star Writers in Year 3! They both wrote exceptional poems about fire.
Nina made sure to include some powerful adjectives in her poem to create a vivid image in the reader's mind. She also used some brilliant rhyming words, which made the poem even more enjoyable to read.
"My favourite part of my poem is where I used onomatopoeia because it sounds like the fire and it makes it really fun to perform" - Nina, Hazel
Summer's poem was so exciting to read as it not only included alliteration, but she also used onomatopoeia. The words really made it feel like the fire was surrounding us when it was performed!
"My favourite part of my poem is where I used rhyming words fizzle and sizzle because it makes it more fun for the reader to perform" - Summer, Sequoia
Well done Nina and Summer, you should be very proud of your skills as poets!

Solids, Liquids, Gases...they all matter!
This week in Science, Year 3 have been exploring the different properties of solids, liquids and gases. They were even able to investigate this at a molecular level!
"Solids are different to liquids because they hold their shape and cannot be poured." Sabeer, Sequoia
"Interestingly, even though sand, sugar and salt can be poured, they are all still solids because each individual grain holds its shape!" Kiera, Sequoia
The children also investigated that things can change states of matter. For example, water can freeze into ice and become a solid or it can evaporate into water vapour and become a gas.
"We went outside to show how the molecules are arranged differently in each state of matter. In solids, they are very tightly packed and vibrate, in liquids they move around more freely and in gases they are further apart and move around very quickly." Jessica, Hazel
"It was so much fun when we pretended to be the molecules outside. We started out really close to together, because we were a solid and then we warmed up and became a liquid, until eventually we were freely running around quickly because we had evaporated into a gas!" James, Sequoia
Can you think of an example when matter changes state at home?

Ash Class the money experts!
Today in Maths, we worked in partners to convert money amounts from pounds to pence. We all used our multiplication and division by 100 knowledge to try and solve the challenge cards. Throughout the task, we worked well with our partners, we showed our reflectiveness skills by applying our previous learning. For each challenge card we wrote out the place value grids in order to ensure we converted accurately.
