First pen licences in Year 4!!

Well done to Kanishka, Harry, Lily, Katlyn and Finley who have been awarded the first pen licences in Year 4.

They have been working tirelessly to ensure their work is always beautifully presented and handwriting is joined.

Well done children; your hard work has paid off!

We take presentation of work and handwriting very seriously in Year 4. This is a fundamental part of the writing process to ensure children can continue to make required progress. Please see the statements below for more information regarding the national requirements.

Fingers crossed, in the coming weeks we will have even more Pen Licences given out!

National Curriculum expectations statutory requirements:

Pupils should be taught to:
  • Use the diagonal and horizontal strokes that are needed to join letters and understand which letters, when adjacent to one another, are best left unjoined
  • Increase the legibility, consistency and quality of their handwriting [for example, by ensuring that the down strokes of letters are parallel and equidistant; that lines of writing are spaced sufficiently so that ascenders and descenders of letters do not touch].

Pupils should be joining handwriting throughout their independent writing. Handwriting should continue to be taught, with the aim of increasing the fluency with which pupils are able to write what they want to say. This, in turn, will support their composition and spelling.

Year 4 Scientists classifying leaves!

In science, Year 4 are learning about Living Things and Their Habitats. For the past few weeks, our focus has been on classification; creating classification keys to classify different types of plants and animals.

On Tuesday, the children of Ash and Birch explored outside the classroom into Broadford's playground to collect different types of leaves. We are indeed in the middle of winter so it was difficult to find some! We all looked very carefully for leaves on the floor. We then came back inside and worked in pairs to create our classification keys.

We first planned on whiteboards and then drew the classification key on A3 paper. We learned different technical vocabulary, such as lobate, serrate, entire (words that describe the edge of the leaf). We then put this to use for our closed-questions (e.g., Is the edge of the leaf serrated?)

The children worked extremely hard to create their classification key and worked so well in pairs using their reciprocity skills!

Miss Islam and Miss Young are extremely impressed with the amount of scientific enquiry and curiosity in both Birch and Ash!

Year 3 Curriculum - Spring

Year 3 - Curriculum Newsletter
We hope you find this letter informative, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum.

Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
  • 5 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record
  • 15 minutes practising spellings
  • 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)
If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have a new Worldly Wise challenge for the Autumn Term. There will be more detailed information to follow regarding this.

Spellings:
Spellings will be given out on Mondays. The children should practise their words every evening. We encourage the children to write their words in sentences on the back of their homework sheet. Their spelling test will take place on Fridays.

Rockstar Times Tables:
Children will be completing their times tables daily in school at the start of each maths lesson. Please practise times tables with your children at home. They all have passwords and access to the Rockstars app or alternatively they could simply practise writing their times tables out. They take part in a ‘Sound Check’ every Friday morning which involves their test taking place.

Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you have any questions about the topics being covered, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Taylor

Broadford Badge - Master - Full Colour.png
Dear parents or carers,

In Geography we have been learning about the rainforest. In the next part of our learning, we will be building a rainforest using recyclable materials. We would appreciate it if you could donate spare cereal boxes, bottles, cans, any animal toys that you do not use and any other recyclable materials. Please send these resources in by Wednesday 29th January 2020.

Kind regards,

The Year 4 team.
