Highest number wins- Place value games in Willow maths set

Today in maths Year 3 were required to put their number and place value knowledge to the test! The winner of the game was the child with the highest three digit number.

In their pairs, they each rolled a die which was either in their favour (a 6 to put in the hundreds column ) or an unlucky 1!

Using their mathematical knowledge, the children needed to think carefully about where to place then number they rolled. For some children, risk-taking paid off. For others, it meant game over! 

Halfway through the game, Miss Rooney added another game changing rule. Children were now allowed to place a number they had rolled into their partner's three digit number! It caused a bit of upset when Archy decided to put a 1 in Miss Rooney's hundreds column!

Winners or losers, we all had a lot of fun applying our place value skills today!

Pop ups energy investigation

Yesterday afternoon, Birch Class were working hard in science observing potential and kinetic energy. 

Using pop up toys the children investigated how potential energy can be transferred into kinetic energy and back again. Realising that there is energy within any object they went to identify potential and kinetic energy within their environment. 

Tarsia puzzles in Willow maths set

Today, year 3 have been working hard on their mental maths skills. First, they had to count up and down in sequences then they had to add and take away 10 and 100- all in their heads!

After a warm up, they applied their mental maths to some Tarsia puzzles. Using their reciprocity skills to help, they mastered the challenging work!

Outstanding work Year 3! Let's practise those mental maths skills at home so that we're even quicker in class!

Stone Age facts

Mia and Daniel from Birch Class have been working incredibly hard at home researching facts about our topic this term, Stone Age to Iron Age. 

"I couldn't believe how many years ago the early humans lived in caves, it was fascinating to learn how they hunted for food" Mia Birch Class.

Science fiction in Willow

Willow class have started their new topic in literacy this week and I can already see that they are going to produce some incredibly imaginative science fiction pieces!

They started by thinking how they might feel if they had invented a new creature. Some children were filled with pride, others intrigued as to how the creature might behave.

Then, they thought about how they would feel if they were the creature. Some children said that they felt perplexed, others elated.

Some had much more frightening thoughts!

After, the children had the opportunity to think of their own science fiction stories. 

Using their reciprocity skills, they discussed in detail how their stories would unfold.

Project Superstar

Vakare in Willow class has working incredibly hard over the Christmas holidays and has produced some super writing!
