Pictorial maths on the playground!

Yesterday year 3 enjoyed the glorious weather as they solved fractional problems in their pairs. Building on their understanding of finding fractions of amounts using concrete objects, the children were able to find the solution to tricky problems by drawing it.

Not only did they find unit fractions of amounts, but they were also able to find non-unit fractions of amounts where the numerator is larger than 1.

"It was much easier drawing out the question to solve it. First, we shared the total amount into equal groups and then we looked at the numerator to tell us how many groups we needed to look at," Bayleigh, Sequoia

"Before you divide the total into equal groups, you need to know how many groups to put it in. You can use the denominator to do this as this represents how many equal parts a whole is divided into," Sajida, Sequoia

Great job year 3, you will be mathematical masters in no time!
