Year 3's Magnificent Maths!

This term Year 3 have been learning all about addition and subtraction with 2 digit and 3 digit numbers.

They have been using dienes, base 10, place value counters and the column method to help them add and subtract. We have been learning all about 'regrouping' and 'exchanging' using visuals such as base 10 and abstract methods such as the column method!

We use the technique of 'My turn, your turn' where we show them how to work out a calculation using one of these methods and they practice on their whiteboards throughout the lesson before starting their task. This helps them develop their understanding before becoming independent.

It has been fantastic to see them develop their skills and the year 3 team are very proud of their determination! They are becoming little experts!

'We regroup when there is more than 9 in one column!' - Megan

'We exchange when we use subtraction.' - Alex

'We always start at the ones column when we add or subtract!' - Asher

Next term, we will start to look at multiplication and division. We will be using similar methods to make sure the children can deepen their learning and understanding.
