Year 4 Wild Passport Day: Weaving Friendship in the Forest 🌿
This week, our Year 4 children enjoyed a very special Wild Passport Day as part of Forest School—the children took part in hands-on learning that encouraged teamwork, patience, and connection with one another.
One of the actitivies of the day was creating friendship bracelets using reciprocity. To make their bracelets, the children replicated an ancient Nordic Sling Braiding technique. This involved gently swinging strands of thread to one another so that, little by little, the threads wrapped and twisted together.
As well as braiding, the children worked in small groups to construct a wooden frame, joining four sticks together using a clove hitch and lashing. This practical task developed fine motor skills, perseverance, and teamwork, while also introducing the children to traditional knot-tying techniques used in outdoor learning and survival skills. The completed frames were then used tocreate pictures using natural resources.
Alongside the crafting activities, the children also took part in orienteering, using simple maps and natural landmarks to navigate the School area. This challenged them to work collaboratively, make decisions together, and build confidence as they explored their surroundings safely and independently.
