Year 3 spellings week beginning 5/10/15

Here are the spellings for this week. The spelling test will be on Friday every week. Please encourage your child to look up the definitions of the words as some are trickier than expected. A reminder that children are expected to bring their spelling book to school every Friday.

World War 2 evacuation talk

On Thursday afternoon the year 3 children were exceptionally privileged to hear the account of Mr Cook (Miss Cook's grandad!), who was evacuated to the Suffolk countryside during the war. The children had thought of lots of questions to ask about the upheaval Mr Cook experienced during this time. History really came to life for the children as they realised Mr Cook was the same age as them when he was taken from his father and mother in wartime Romford.

Mosaic Making

The children of Sequoia class are thoroughly enjoying their Roman topic. Today, during their ART lesson, the children had the opportunity to create their own symmetrical mosaics. The children worked together to create their own patterns using multi-link and then used their artistic skills to transfer the patterns onto square paper. It was a real pleasure to see the children using reciprocity throughout the lesson. They are all now very excited to use their designs to create their own mosaics next week!

Leaf Inspectors

This afternoon in Birch Class the children continued their study of the process of photosynthesis by examining leave. The children were resilient in using microscopes to observe the outer structure of a leaf.

The children ventured outside to collect an array of leaves in order to build a comparison between the structure of different leaves, primarily green and brown leaves.

Working together we were able to capture two magnified images of the outer structure of different leaves.

Year 3 travel back to World War 2

On Friday children in Year 3 and 4 had the opportunity to watch a performance depicting the life of Sergeant Tull during his time serving in the British Army in World War 2. The performance focused on life during the war and the sacrifices the men and women serving in the army had to make to protect Queen and country.

In the afternoon children in year 3 were able to handle some artefacts from the war, including foot powder and different types of gas masks. Making observations the children worked together to describe and make predictions to what they thought the artefacts were used for during the 1940s.

To immerse themselves into life on the battle ground the children came together to construct a performance of their own.

Road Safety

This morning Years 3 and 4 took part in a road safety workshop with a difference. Through the medium of magic, we learned about a range of different types of pedestrian crossings and how to remain safe when crossing the road. We also had a good laugh at 'Grandma's car'! Most importantly, the children were able to remember the four key points for staying safe when near roads: 'stop, look, listen, think'.
