Fraction Frenzy In Year 4

As the children begin their new unit on fractions, year 4's have been using concrete objects to identify different fractions, and make whole numbers.

On Tuesday, students enthusiastically collected different objects from around the class (pencils, tangrams, Lego, dice - you name it!) and identified various fractions according to colour, size, and type. They used their reciprocity skills to complete the task in pairs, and their resourcefulness skills to get really creative!

"There's 4/7 red scissors!"  Dora
"There are 2/3 blue highlighter and 1/3 yellow."  Kiera

On Thursday, we used Lego to identify how fractions with different denominators could be added together to make 1 whole. Students impressed us by using a variety of combinations of smaller Lego pieces to create a whole. Well done to year 4!

"My tower is 3/4 orange and 1/4 blue" Lewis

“We found that 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 1 whole” Kara and Florence

“We did 3/4 + 1/8 + 1/8”  Dorrie and Alex

We ended the week by using an app to create and compare fractions. The children demonstrated a secure understanding of different fractions having the equivalent values.

Now that we have had experience with concrete and pictorial representations of fractions  we can now move on to abstract next week!
