Year 4 Panto Trip!

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Year 4 children. The trip will allow the children to experience a pantomime at the Queen’s theatre. The Robin Hood production has sparkling sets, colourful costumes, tunes that everyone knows, lots of laughter and most importantly plenty of audience participation.

The Year 4 children will be visiting the Queen’s theatre on Thursday 5th December 2019, the performance will begin at 10:00am. All children should be in school by 8:45am as we will be leaving at 9:15am. We expect to arrive back at school at approximately 1.00pm so the children will need to either bring in a packed lunch or order a School packed lunch to eat as soon as we get back to school. The children will be given popcorn and drink during the show and will have the opportunity to have a piece of fruit.

The children will be travelling via bus to and from Queen’s theatre. The children will be accompanied by teachers and support staff from the school. Please ensure children have warm coats and are wearing appropriate footwear.

The trip costs £700 in total for the Year 4 classes so we are asking for a contribution of £10 per child to cover part of the pantomime ticket price. Please make your contributions on sQuid. If you have any questions or queries about payment, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
This is an exciting opportunity for the children to experience a pantomime. We thank you for your continuing support.

Ash Visit Harold Hill Library

Yesterday Year 4 took a trip down to Harold Hill Library. We met RJ (Rob) Thompson, who is the author of the series 'The Uncuddibles'. Rob read some stories to us, showed us how he illustrates all his books using his iPad, and prepared us for some brilliant activities.

Some children wrote their own book covers and blurbs, whilst others played an Uncuddibles-themed board game. Other children drew their own Uncuddibles super-bear!

Thank you Rob for the pleasure of meeting you and reading your captivating stories.

Reciprocity- Jeremiah has been trying really hard to behave well in class. I was super impressed with his participation in Science this week. He was able to find a solution to fix the instrument he made with his group. Well done!

Year 3 are as busy as beavers!

Year 3 have been looking at similes as part of their fiction unit around Science Fiction! We learnt that similes use words such ‘like’ or ‘as’ to compare two similar things.

The classes played games of match the similes where they had to try to match two parts of a simile so it made sense. Only using previous knowledge the children really did well, finding similes such as ‘as cold as ice’.

After this, some children then tried out some similes onto whiteboard, and then wrote their own into their books.

Hannah said “similes are when you compare one thing to another.”

Hopefully your child has got the bug for Science Fiction, please look out for any stories that might fit this genre!

Year 4 History - Museum Walk

This week year 4 learnt about historical sources and evidence. We discussed the differences between primary and secondary sources and how primary sources help historians understand past events, people and societies. The children then went on a ‘Museum Walk’ where the could see, touch and even listen to different types of sources and identify what they tell us about history.

Year 4 Roman army reenactment

For the glory of Rome!!

This week year 4 students were transported back to Roman Britain and inducted in to the most elite of ancient armies - The Roman Empire! Ash and Birch faced off in a battle for who could demonstrate the best Roman battle formations. We have been learning about ancient armies in topic, and one reason why the Romans were able to defeat the Greeks was because of their superior battle tactics. The Roman Empire deployed 3 formations in the course of a battle:

The Wedge

The Tortoise

The Orb

As the children completed the formations , they reflected on how disciplined Roman soldiers had to be to follow orders and not let their fellow soldiers down. Some children felt brave, strong and focused as they participated in the formations, while others said they would probably panic in a real battle! (Safe to say we are thankful we'll never know!) Both classes showed great resourcefulness and reciprocity, however it was Ash class who came away with the win as they were able to protect the Standard and also perform the Tortoise manoeuvre to escape.
