Mesmerizing Multiplication & Dazzling Division in Year 4

As part of the Maths curriculum, children in Year 4 have been studying the unit Multiplication and division. As part of this unit, Year 4 children have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10 and 100. Children in Ash, Birch and Larch have been using place value charts, counters and dienes to help them divide by 10 and 100. Counters and dienes are both wonderful resources that can be used in mathematics in a number of ways to understand the process of working out a maths problem.

Below are pictures of children completing their learning and giving some great top-tips on how to multiply and divide by 10 and 100.

"It is really easy to multiply and divide by 10 and 100 but it is important to show your working out and also explain how you work something."- Anna, Birch.

"When you multiply by 10, you move your counters one place value to the left." - Elisa, Larch.

"When you multiply by 100, you move your counters two place values to the left."- Awwal, Ash.

"When you divide by 10, you move your counters one place value to the right."- Maisie, Ash.

"When you divide by 100, you move your counters two place values to the right."- Luke, Birch.

"Counters help me physically see my number changing, the colours are really helpful in reading the numbers."- Zach, Larch.

Well done everybody!
