Letter Writing in Year 4

In Literacy this half term we have been reading How To Train Your Dragon.  The chapter we have focused on explains how the brave young Vikings climbed a perilous cliff to face a dragon- infested cave.

Over the last two weeks we have taken on the role of one of these characters and discussed their thoughts and feelings as they undertook this dangerous adventure.

We planned out the events in chronological order and used this as a guide to write a letter to our younger selves; explaining what tasks they would be expected to take on when they were older.

So that the reader had a clear picture in their mind we ensured our descriptions were vivid and detailed. We included expanded noun phrases as well as prepositional phrases to support this.

"I really like adding expanded noun phrases. It makes my description much clearer." - Ivan, Maple

"I'm excited to write my letter from a different person now and how fun with their view of events." - Cruz, Willow

Year 3 Certificates

It's been another wonderful week of learning in Year 3.and this is what we have been learning about this week.

In Literacy, the children started the week by completing an edit and evaluate session focused on their letter responses as the King. The children then planned and produced a persuasive speech which was designed to set out the reasons why the King should ban the dark.

In Maths, the children continued to extend their knowledge of addition and subtraction using the column method. The children were able to add and subtract two numbers whilst crossing hundreds. Great work Year 3!

Here are the certificate winners for this week

E for Excellent - Rehan, Lola and Araoluwa

Happy Teacher - AJ, Hayden and Alesha

Year 3 Literacy

In our Year 3 Literacy topic this half term, the children have embarked on an exciting journey with their new novel, 'The King Who Banned the Dark.' The children approached this new topic with great interest and enthusiasm, eager to explore the wonders of the story.

To start our Literacy journey, we began by closely examining an illustration from our class novel. Working collaboratively in groups, the children utilised their reciprocity skills, engaging in thoughtful discussions and providing detailed answers to a range of questions. One such question was the setting of the story, which led to insightful responses from our perceptive learners.

Additionally, using their reflectiveness skills, the children then used the illustration as a springboard for generating their own questions about the novel. They demonstrated their understanding of punctuation by ensuring their questions were accurately punctuated.

It was amazing to witness the children's active engagement and their ability to form and communicate their thoughts effectively. As we venture further into 'The King Who Banned the Dark,' the children will be given a multitude of literary experiences to help develop their reading comprehension and writing skills. Beginning this week, with the children planning and writing a persuasive speech in the role of the king.

'Why does a king have a rocking horse? Does he have a real horse?' - Olaf, Ash Class

'It would be difficult to sleep if it was light all the time' - Alesha, Cedar Class

'If he is scared of the dark, why does he sleep alone?' - Duke , Cherry Class
