Maths Challenge 30.01.23

Homework Expectations at Broadford Primary School

At Broadford Primary School we believe homework is about balance.

We understand that homework can be an ideal opportunity for consolidation for some, a battle for others, an opportunity for creativity for some of our pupils or quality time for carer and child in what can often be a very busy week.

Daily Homework Expectations
There are home-based tasks that we know help your child at school.  These are fundamental and must be completed every day.  Please speak to your class teacher if you need guidance.

These are 'on average' expectations:
- 15 minutes of reading per night (EYFS. KS1 and KS2)
- 15 minutes of mathematics per night (KS1 & KS2)
- 15 minutes of spelling per night (KS1 & KS2)

Other Learning Opportunities at Home - optional
Click on the year group link to take you to to a booklet of home-based learning.  It contains ideas linked to reading, maths and other areas of learning.

Y1 - Y2: Homework Bingo - optional
We understand children have commitments outside of school but if you have time, children in KS1 are encouraged to take part in 4 or more learning tasks from the Bingo cards at home.  This will be celebrated at school.  Please follow this link for this term's Homework Bingo.

Y3 - Y6: Worldly Wise Challenge - optional
Children in KS2 take part in weekly Worldly Wise assemblies where they learn 'a little about a lot'.  The Worldly Wise Challenge is an opportunity for children to carry out further research linked to the half termly topic.  Please follow this link for more information on this term's topic.

Fact Hunter and SPAG Detectives - optional
Each week, children can solve a SPAG error or complete their own research for an interesting fact on a given topic (click here to see this term's).  In recognition of applying SPaG skills to real life situations and investigating crimes against the English Language AND in recognition of insatiable appetite for knowledge
and ability to sniff out amazing facts, children will be celebrated in school with their peers.

Worldly Wise - Optional Homework Tasks

Every week, pupils have a 'Worldly Wise' assembly where they build and grow their own body of general knowledge.  By knowing a little about a lot they will be able to place events and ideas in context in a variety of different situations.

Last half term, children found out about National Cuisines....it was very interesting!

The 'Worldly Wise' Challenge is an opportunity for pupils to complete further research and tasks linked to the half termly topic.  There are separate activities for Y3/4 (green sheet) and Y5/6 (blue sheet).  They can do as many tasks as they like and do not have to link to the landmarks we have explored in school but can be any landmark that sparks their interest. A copy of the challenges will be sent home this week.

This is optional, and on top of their daily 15 minutes of reading, 15 minutes of spelling practice and 15 minutes of times tables practice.

The pupils will receive a special 'Worldly Wise Challenge' certificate at the end of the half term on completion of a project that shows a significant level of effort and challenge undertaken by the individual child.

You pick what you research; you're in control!
We cannot wait to see where your learning takes you!

Year 4 Viking Day Reminder - 30/1/23

Year 4 will be hosting a Viking Day on the 2nd February 2023 as one of our experiences in Year 4 as it is a topic we are learning in History. We will be having visitors coming to the school to give the children an immersive, exciting experience throughout the day.

We would like the children to come in dressed as Vikings.

This does not have to be anything extravagant but we would love all of the children to feel part of the day.

Here are some ideas for Viking costumes:

- fur jacket

- large belt

- oversized T-Shirt

- cardboard shield

- plaited hair

- cardboard helmet

Some pictures for inspiration:

Parent Volunteers

We need 5 parent volunteers who will be available all day. If you are feeling in the Viking mood and would like to volunteer for the day, then please let your class teacher know as soon as possible.

Year 4 Certificates - 27/1/23

This week's E for Excellence winners are: Ipsa, Krasmir & Ruby.

This week's Star Writer winners are: Max, Asad & Manreet.

The tracker awards go to Shivanshi and Larissa!
