Year 3's Magnificent Mathematicians!

In Maths this week, year 3 have been introduced to dividing a 2 digit number by 1 digit number (e.g. 42 divided by 3). They have used their resourcefulness skills by using different resources such as place value counters and lollipop sticks to help them understand this new concept.

They started by dividing with no exchange (39 divided by 3). They used the steps to success, a place value chart and place value counters to aid their understanding. After this, the children moved on to dividing with an exchange (72 divided by 4). Again, they used the steps to success, a place value chart and place value counters to help them. This was slightly trickier as they needed to exchange 1 ten for 10 ones. However, the children could remember our key mathematical vocabulary and use of exchange from using the column method last term! A huge whale done to them! Lastly, the children ended the week with dividing with remainders. They would consolidate their learning from the week and use this to help them work out answers such as (94 divided by 4).

'I enjoyed using place value counters to help me understand how to divide 63 divided by 3.' - Dina

'I found using lollipop sticks the easiest because I could use grouping and identify how many remainders are left.' - Ali

'I remember exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones when using the column method.' - Arnish
