Year 3 have started a new exciting topic in Science, Forces and Magnets. To start off the Spring term, the children have been developing their understanding of gravity and pushing and pulling forces.
Last Thursday, the children learnt that Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what makes things fall. They carried out an experiment, looking at the mass of an object and which piece of paper, the flat piece, or the scrunched up piece, would fall faster and why. The children discussed how a parachute works with gravity and the bigger the parachute the slower the person will fall. The children then worked in mixed ability pairs to make their own parachute, looking at gravitational pull. The children used both their reciprocity and resourcefulness skills to make their parachute, using string, a coffee filter, sellotape and a multi link. Afterwards, the children went outside and tested their parachutes, discussing how magnetic forces can work at a distance.
This week, the children were learning about pushing and pulling forces. They learnt that a force is a push or pull acting on an object as a result of the objects interaction with another object. The children acted out some different push and pull forces such as pushing a pram or pulling on a rope in tug of war.
'I enjoyed making a parachute to see how fast it would fall.' - Roman
'My A3 parachute was very sturdy.' - Grace
‘I liked acting out tug of war to show a pulling force.’ - Laynie
