Year 3 Star Writers

Well done to Olivia and Polina who are our Star Writers in Year 3 this week!

Olivia has written a fantastic episode of 'A Tale of Two Robots'  making an excellent use of editing to improve her story to make it even more effective for the reader! She has re-read her work looking for any improvements and has focused on using extra detail with clear similes.

Well done to Polina who also wrote an amazing episode of 'A Tale of Two Robots'. Polina was able to use convincing dialogue based on her knowledge of the characters and even remembered to punctuate this dialogue correctly! In addition, Polina included emotive language for the reader throughout which made it incredibly enjoyable to read!

"I made sure to edit my work to make my story even better!" Polina, Sequoia

Year 3's Maths Party

It was an exciting week last week in Year 3 as the children celebrated their love of mathematics with their parents at the maths party.

Children were able to demonstrate some of the content they had been learning about in class and even challenged their parents to beat their fastest time at rockstar timestables.

Children also demonstrated some of the techniques they use in class to support their learning and the strategies used to deepen their understanding.

"I liked all the maths games we got to play!" Ruben, Sequoia

"It was so much fun! I loved that our parents could come so that we could spend some time with them." Naz, Sequoia

Thank you very much to all the parents who were able to attend. It was a great turnout and we hope it was useful for you!

Practical Multiplication in Year 3

Today in maths the children were looking at multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. They realised that multiplication is the same as repeated addition and saw that 32 x 3 is just three lots of 32.

With this conceptual understanding, the children began to practically make the multiplication calculations using the Dienes blocks.

"I was able to use my understanding of partitioning numbers to make the number and then solve the calculation" - Lewis, Sequoia

Great job year 3! You are going to be multiplication masters in no time!

Year 3 see the light!

Year 3 have had another exciting week in science, investigating how light travels. They learnt that light is an energy source and that energy can be transferred to different objects.

They were able to witness this in action with the plasma ball, which illuminated the fluorescent light without even touching it! It's not magic - it's science!

The children then discovered that we can see objects because light travels in a straight line from its light source and then reflects off an object into our eyes!

They also learnt that light can be blocked by opaque objects as it can only travel in a straight line and not bend round the object!

Great investigative work year 3. You are all super scientists!

Ash- Star Writer! 19.01.18

In Ash class, our star writer for this week is Megan Lewis!

Megan has
produced an excellent balanced argument this week using 3rd person, powerful vocabulary, valid points, formal tone and present tense. Megan has not only used her reflectiveness skills to plan her work but she has also used her resourcefulness skills using the spelling list to independently correct her work.

Well done Megan, you are a super star! Keep up the excellent work!

I can't wait to read more of your writing, Miss Daly :)

Week 2- I’m a pupil get me outta here

It was another fantastic week at Broadford University for the 'I'm a pupil get me outta here' students.

This week, the pupils were working in their groups to complete the ball challenge. It was safe to say the groups did NOT have the weather on their side! All the groups showed resilience when the wind was against them!

They were encouraged to complete the team challenge, using their learning powers of resourcefulness, reciprocity, resilience and reflectiveness.

Year 3's Super Star Writers!

Year 3 have amazed us this week with their superb writing of their own versions of 'A Tale of Two Robots'. Congratulations to Kara Middleton and Sophia Houlston who are this week's Star Writers!

Sophia wrote an outstanding story, making an excellent use of '3 -ed openers', dialogue and emotive language to capture the reader's attention. Most importantly, she was able to clearly explain why she used those particular features and how they would make her writing effective.

"I have used dialogue in my story effectively because the reader is clearly able to understand how the characters are feeling at different points." Sophia Houlston - Sequoia.

Kara has written an attention grabbing story with a fantastic use of thought provoking similes to compare objects, correct use of punctuation with dialogue to show character's feelings and excellent use of adverbs of manner.

"I tried to use powerful similes using 'like' or 'as' because it creates an image in the reader's mind and this also helps them to know how the characters might be feeling." Kara Middleton - Hazel

Hazel Get to Grips with Light

Year 3 have launched themselves in to learning all about our new topic in Science - light. They worked really hard in groups to discuss, explain and justify when sorting out objects in to two categories - sources of light and not sources of light.

The children showed an excellent initial understanding of light and are very excited to learn more about the topic throughout the spring term.

"Today, I have learnt that the moon is not a source of light, even though it looks like it is at night time, it actually just reflects the sun's light!" - Bonnie Martin, Hazel Class.

"I thought cat's eyes were lights but today I found out that they reflect the light from cars." - Ruben Roberts, Sequoia.

Keep an eye out for more work from our budding scientists in Year 3!

Birch Reflect on their New Science Topic

This afternoon, Year 4 began their new topic of LIGHT! Birch class had to which items were light sources and which were not.

There was some debate about whether a mirror is a light source or not... Ronnie thought it was because it reflected a lot of light, but Charis disagreed, saying that if you put a mirror in a completely dark room, it would have nothing to reflect.

After some discussion, the class agreed that it was not a light source! Some of the groups' work can be seen below.

Bonus Joke: Why was the mirror awarded a certificate in E for Excellence?
Because it was being reflective!

Stay tuned for more science lessons on light throughout this term!

Ash class - Light!

Today in Science, we worked in groups to identify the cards that were sources of light, and which ones were not. We had to justify why the card was or wasn’t a light source. Some of the cards were tricky to sort, we had to use our resilience skills and persevere when we found the task challenging.

We learnt that the moon is not a light source because it does not make its own light. We can see the moon because light from the sun reflects off it (bounces off it) back to the Earth.

The window is not a light source. It is an opening that lets the light from the sun or other light source into the room.

Also, the mirror is not a source of light because it does not make its own light. It reflects light from other sources.

Birch Star Writer 12.01.2018

Congratulations to Alex Ianache who amazed Mr Nicol with his creativity when discussing the arguments for and against animals being kept in zoos! Alex, your hard work will help you this week when we write our own balanced arguments.

Year 3's Star Writers!

Congratulations to last week's Star Writers in year 3, Laicey and Keira!

Laicey wrote a captivating build up to her story by ensuring to build suspense and use effective dialogue. She was able to write convincing dialogue based on her understanding of the characters and even made sure to correctly use inverted commas!

Keira wrote a fantastic story mountain which she will be making use of throughout this week to help her when she is writing her story.

Keira wrote using clear detail and made excellent use of vocabulary to describe how the main characters of her story would feel after the problems they would experience on their adventures!

" I really like the 2a sentences I used because it describes it more for the reader and creates a clear image in their mind."
Laicey, Sequoia

"I am excited to use the adjective dismayed to show how Robert is feeling because it is more powerful than using sad. It makes the reader feel sorry for Robert!"
Keira, Hazel

Keep up the amazing writing girls!
