Ash- Star Writer! 29.03.18

In Ash class, our star writer for this week is Samuel Hatwell!

Samuel has produced an excellent set of instructions to not only create delicious cookies but also to make juicy jelly. He has organised his work using sub headings, bullet points and has used a wide variety of imperative verbs.

Well done Samuel, you are a super star! Keep up the excellent work!

I can't wait to read more of your writing, Miss Daly :)

Guinness Book of Records!

Recently, we had a surprise guest at Broadford School, in order to help us celebrate Science Week!! Robin Ince (best known for presenting 'The Infinite Monkey Cage' with physicist Brian Cox) gave us a visit as part of our challenges with 'Guiness World Records'. Year 4 volunteers from Ash and Birch class worked with Robin Ince to perform some hands on science tests and attempt to recreate and beat a few world records!

This was also filmed for Guiness World Records and so the children got to see what a real film set looked like. Sycamore was transformed by a whole film crew and the children even had their own microphones, just like they have seen on TV.

Year 4 Travel to a Virtual Rainforest!

This morning, year 4 were treated to a visit from Stuart and his virtual reality headsets! Stuart gave a quick explanation of how to use the equipment and before we knew it, we were off!

Max and Adi were impressed by the HUGE rhinoceros beetle, but Grace thought it was a little scary!

With everyone looking through their headsets, it was bizarre seeing people move their heads around and point at things which weren't really there!

Birch and Ash were attentive, enthusiastic, and polite. All partners were patient with each other demonstrating excellent reciprocity that we have worked so hard on this year. They responded fantastically well to the questions that Stuart asked them, and Tyler couldn't wait to tell Mr Nicol about the Dead Leaf Mantis he saw over lunch.

This was a brilliant example of how technology inspires and stimulates children's learning. Good job year 4 and thank you Stuart!

Year 4 Jelly Madness!

This morning in Literacy, year 4 worked together in groups of 4 to write their own set of instructions to make jelly. Mr Nicol had been very sneaky and given some ingredients and equipment that did not need to be used. Each group of 4 worked effectively, selecting the equipment, taking turns to add the ingredients and sharing their ideas.

Year 4 showed both their resourcefulness skills and reciprocity skills during this task. Miss Daly and Mr Nicol were very proud to watch the year group work so well together.

Ash- Decimal experts!

Today in Maths, we worked in partners to answer questions about tenths and hundredths decimal place value. We all used our knowledge of place value, addition and decimals to try and solve the challenging decimal problems.

Throughout the task, we worked well with our partners, we used our resilience skills and we persevered when we found the task challenging!

Everyone in the class also showed their reciprocity skills and worked together as a team. Miss Daly was very impressed with the class! :)

Cooking Cookies in Birch

Today, Birch followed the instructions that they had created earlier this week. Reading the ingredients, the equipment, and the method together, the two groups created the cookie mixture using a sieve along with a weighing scales and a bowl...

Tommy's got a bit messy as you can see...

Each child took them home to scoff, along with cakes which Tommy had kindly brought in from home to celebrate not just his own birthday but Tyler's as well.

The students also went home with a parents' evening slip today informing you of the time of the appointment. If there are any problems with timings, either phone Mrs Taylor at the office or catch us after school on Monday.

Have a good weekend and remember to get those reading records signed!

Mr Nicol and Mrs Spence :)

Need Instructions for Slime? Ask Birch Class!

This morning, Birch class marked each other's instructions for making slime. They were looking out for imperative verbs, time adverbials, and a clear method set out in chronological steps.

After highlighting the positives and suggesting points to improve on, we then carried out the method with all the necessary ingredients and things. Got. Messy...

Using flour, water, and food colouring, some partners found that they had to deviate from the set instructions. "Our slime was too watery so we needed more than 1 cup of flour," observed Harry...

This was an exercise in testing our instruction texts and all pairs managed to work together successfully.
Have a good weekend, and we will see you on Monday, ready to sign your reading records!

Lava Lamps in Year 3!

Year 3 have had an exciting Science week as they made their own lava lamps today in their science lesson.

They added vegetable oil, water and food colouring to a container and then added some fizzing tablets (Alka Seltzer). They then watched in awe as they saw the tablet effervesce and the lava lamp effect begin!

"It was so cool, I was scared it was going to erupt like a volcano!" Bayleigh, Sequoia

The children learnt that firstly the oil and water cannot mix because of "intermolecular polarity". This means that the molecules in water and the molecules in oil do not bond together. We discussed that when oil is dispersed into water it creates an emulsion. The children learnt that this is how ice-cream, butter and even mayonnaise is made!

"I wasn't sure if the oil and water would separate again, but they did because it's an emulsion." Archie, Sequoia

After the children added in the tablet, they saw it sink to the bottom as start to dissolve. This created bubbles and, as they rose to the top, they took some of the coloured water with them.

This is a fun demonstration that can be easily done at home and I'm sure the children would love to show it to you! As it is Science week, we also discussed some potential research questions for the children to find the answers to at home. That way, you can turn the demonstration into a scientific experiment!

"What if you added two tablets at once?" Ruben, Sequoia

"Would it be different if you used warm water instead of cold water?" Sabeer, Sequoia

If you would like to try this at home please click here to find out what you need and how to do it.

Please send in some pictures if you do carry out the experiment at home and we would love to find out the answers to those questions!

Year 4 Lava Lamps!

To celebrate British Science Week, both Birch and Ash took on the task of making their own lava lamps!

With water, oil, food colouring, and an effervescent tablet, year 4 managed to create an amazing display of colourful bubbles due to the sodium bicarbonate reacting with the water.

This experiment demanded reciprocity between pairs which both classes demonstrated superbly.
