Does toothpaste really protect our teeth? Sequoia are on the case to find out!

This week in Science, Sequoia class have been investigating the effect acidic food and drink can have on our teeth. They learnt that if we eat too much sugary food, the bacteria in our mouths grows and attacks our teeth! This is called an "acid attack" and can lead to cavities, which will mean fillings!

Egg shells are very similar to teeth as they can also be weakened by acid. When you put an egg in an acidic liquid, it attacks the shell, making it soft and weak.

The children started by rubbing toothpaste on one egg (quite a messy job!) and then left the other egg. They then put both eggs in vinegar.

We are leaving the eggs overnight to see what happens. We are very excited to see the results, but perhaps not as excited to smell our classroom tomorrow morning!

"I predict that the egg covered in toothpaste will be less damaged than the egg just in vinegar because the toothpaste acts like a shield to protect the egg shell from the acidic vinegar" Ruben, Sequoia.

We will see if the results match our predictions! Well done, Sequoia. You are talented chemists already!
