Birch's Acid Eggsperiment

This afternoon, Birch class started the first part of an experiment into how acids affect tooth enamel. After a quick revisit of the pH scale, the children started to ask what happens if you add acids to alkalies, alkalies to acids, and neutral substances to both.

Morgan asked what happens if you something neutral to something neutral; Sophie asked what happens if you add three things together, and Charis told us how she once put vinegar on a bee sting to help the pain.

In partners, Birch then put 2 eggs in a beaker: one covered in toothpaste, one with no toothpaste, and left them in vinegar to see what will happen to them overnight.

Evie wasn't too impressed with the smell of vinegar!

Birch class then followed up the experiment by predicting what the effects would be... We'll find out before our trip tomorrow morning!

And no laughing at the way Mr Nicol says 'toothpaste'!
